Hey guys this is a battle between Ati and Nvidia, representing the ATI side is the X700Pro 256mb and representing the Nvidia side is 6600GT. Each of these cards as its pros and cons.
So guys who do you think will win in a show down?
in games such as Doom3 and HL2
So which one will come out on top, which card will perform better?

After i recieve enough votes for the card i wil post the results
so start voting.

6600GT performs better in everything (except for a tiny boost, in HL2, at higher resolutions with aa and af)

Also, there are a ton of threads about this, try using the search button, it's across from the new post button

No reason to be so harsh, you've done your share of speculating and idle posting (0 - [H]Gawd in two months, 22 posts a day).

Anyway, the 6600GT is a better card overall. Here's a review:
http://hardocp.com/article.html?art=NzA4

I don't think the X700 Pro was meant to compete with the 6600GT... but ATI cancelled the X700XT, and so that really leaves nothing to compete with the 6600GT.

6600GT

Reasons:
-SM3.0
-Faster in most games expect HL2 but not by much
-If you get PCI-e it can be used with SLI in the future
-BFG has OC version which would be a good choice if buying.

BTW, please don't make threads labeled things like ATI vs.Nvidia; but more specific so it's easier to help and everyone doesn't scream "OMFG, n00b!!!!!! le4v3 or d1e!!!!11!" Try "6600GT vs X700"

Just to be clear, SM3.0 is useless, by the time it is used (properly) an 6600GT will be to slow to support the games that it is used in.

(Except for Chaos theory, but that was because the dev decided to be assholes and only allo 3.0 or 1.0)

6600GT.
A better card allaround, which is odd because if you look at what each card has (tech wise such as Pixel Pipelines and Vertex shaders) the X700 looks as if it would be entierly on par with it, but eh I cant argue with results nor want to. My vote goes the 6600GT.

6600GT.. Read the reviews, they will inform you.. That's the idea of them. Do you really want biased personal opinions, like that of 'Hate_Bot'? or would you prefer a professional opinion?

I own 2 6600GT's and they're very quick.

Just to be clear, SM3.0 is useless, by the time it is used (properly) an 6600GT will be to slow to support the games that it is used in.

this is a 6600GT vs. X700 thread.. it's not a come in and diss 6600GT thread. You'll probably find that somewhere in the ATI section.. BTW, i would dissagree with your theory of the cards being to slow by that time. We'll just have to wait and see who's right..

really so why is ATI going the sm 3.0 route? is it because its useless? i am sure when ATI gets the r520 out probably all the fanATIcs will cheer for ati releasing r520 with sm 3.0 support.

anywas my vote goes to 6600gt because its beats x700series and a vanilla x800

Because ATIs new cards, will be fast enough to support the first games that will use SM3.0 alot

ATI Didnt waste time/money making a feature work for there current cards, which is intirely pointless at the time. Personally, I dont care about SM3.0. Once I see a game that uses it, and you see a Large imporvement in performance because of it, then I will care about it.

The fact of the matter is, when discussing SM3.0 right now, it is pointless.

Also, the major game that does support alot of it's featurs, is AOE3. the developers have said themselves, that even with SM3.0 support, there currently is no card with the ability to handle all the effects possible in the game.

So yes, SM3.0 is useless at the moment, the reason ATI is adding support, is because they have said themselves there next card will feature high performance for particle effects (water/dust etc...) and obviously SM3.0 is needed. The current cards, from both Nvidia and ATI, both lack the features to fully support SM3.0, Even with Nvidias support, it still lacks the features to incorprate all of the effects, that make SM3.0 worthwile

I never said that the 6600GT is bad. FOr a budget solution, it is an incredible card and yes, for that price point, not even ATI Makes a better solution

also, about the lets see whos right, like I said the Devs of AOE3 have already stated that.

The fact that SM3.0 is on the cards in the first place isn't exactly going to make them slower ;) Once games do come out that support it, Like the developers of 1 game (apparently) stated it may not be able to run all the eye candy but, the fact that it supports SM3.0 will benifit the card. It may not be able to run ALL of the effects but it will be able to run more than what it could without SM3.0 support.. So why diss it? Because ATI are behind at the moment?

AOE3 will also have a lot of work done before it's released, and so will the nvidia drivers.. so i wouldn't be supprised if it ends up working quite well. And if not, then you can just put another 6600GT in and run SLI, which has also been improving dramatically latley. Wait for the soon to be released [H]ard OCP review that they've been working on all of this week..

6600GT is a better performing card.

But not everyone tells you straight up facts.

People have more problems with certain situations or games with the GT.

X700 pro is slightly slower on some games and a lot in doom3 but you get a peace of mind with ATI. Like Intel does for CPU's.....

ATI always had better 2D and better DVD decoding. When you do resell your radeon card you'll get more back than an Nvidia card.

SM3 is useless on a 6600GT. 6800GT is different. It has the raw power.

Why not spend 80-100$ more and get an x800xl, assuming you have pci-e?

Btw, I own an agp msi 6600gt, and I like it so far.

[Edit:] Just saw the post above mine... Can you elaborate on "peace of mind"?

Nice general statement with no evidence there. I'd say that with all the 6 series nvidia's supporting Pure Video for DVD decoding I think ATI have lost that for a while at least.

It's not useless! It will help future games run faster.. The ATI crowd sure are quick to dismiss anything that Nvidia has over them, aren't they.. Face it, if the x700's supported it and nvidia didn't, you'd point it out as a feature of the card for longevity..

[rant]Then there's the SLI benifit 2x6600GTs go faster than a 6800Ultra in 3d Mark 05 and other apps as well. There's grunt for you.. 3D mark is a good example of how games will run once they have 'real' SLI support programed in because it is the first application to do this with real driver support as well.. It now runs at exactly double the performance of a single card. Giving me over 7000 3D 05 Marks with my SLI 6600GT's.. [/rant]

not to derail or anything, but this place has started to suck a lot more with hate-bots comments. Just thought i'd throw that out there.

Also, isnt the 6600GT''s price at compusa 250? For 50 bucks more u could get an x800xl.

I thought two 6600gt's beat a 6800gt in 3dmarks, not an ultra. And better in game...? :p

[Edit:] Pricewise they seem to range from 180-220ish, with more added for bfg's i'd venture. But at B&M's i'd guess it'd be better to go with an xl, as most stores never seem to lower the initial prices by much.

Dude on a 6600GT do you really think that a card that is only better than a 9800XT by a not so big but not so small margin is going to run games on SM3.0 when they come out using as much as they can? I agree that it is a plus point but not even current highend guns are going to be powerful enough to run at super high settings with AA and AF with high res and full SM3.0 Quality. Thats the point we are trying to make that even though its not bad its not really all that great though. For a 6800GT yeah its a selling point (to some) but to me until the G80 or R520 come out SM3.0 wont be able to go to its full potential.
Look at it any way you want label us any way you want but the fact is its a new tech and this is the first set of hardware that has it and like all others before it you wont be able to run at the res/AA/AF/Quality settings you want when games that have it come out.
Look at the 9700s (great cards) they had SM2.0 and DX9.0 support does it run DOOM3 and Far Cry at 60+fps?

Why? Because his opinions differ from yours? I agree he is slightly ATI Biased but dont tell me their arent Nvidia guys on the fourm just like him and or worse.

Why cause I'm downplaying your card? LOL I make my own conclusions not by people or a website told me so.

What do you think Peace of mind is? Something you know that you will like and will not screw up. Lot of people are having issues with the GT games like Everquest 2.

Nvidia's quality isn't even in the same quality as ATI cards. Do I like nvidia cards and what they bring to the table? Sure I do... Making ATI card prices go lower and lower.

This is the reason why Nvidia cards are little cheaper even though they perform better.

ATI is an old company like Intel. They've in the industry forever. Lot of companies come and go. But ATI didn't get to where they are by making crappy video cards.

Same goes to Intel and AMD.

Sure it will... Tell that to your original geforce or GTS cards. I'm not saying it will perform slower but it'll be too slow to even run a SM3 game unless you like looking at slide shows.

History repeats itself whether you like it or not.

Like I said, those future games will be to advanced for even current cards to support fully, on a 6600GT sm3.0 is usless.

Maybe on a 6800GT or uktra, its not, but those cards still wont be able to run all the effects that games will have that support SM3.0 alot.

Two 6600 GTs are about equal to an Ultra in most benchmarks and in all gaming other than at very high resolutions.

Let's not be too general here... I'm a proud ATI crowd member, but you don't see me going around dissing everything that NV does wrong/behind. It would be like me saying "geez those nv people always criticize every one of us without thinking that some of us aren't totally blinded ATI fans..." (no offense to other ATI buds)

And right now, SM3.0 doesn't really add an edge over SM2.0b. It may in the future, and when SM3.0 games come out it could give an edge to this current gen of NV cards over ATI's, but at the current point in time not really.

I would recommend the 6600GT, because it does perform better than the X700Pro. Sure you get more memory with the X700Pro, but it doesn't really help it like a faster core and stuff would. The 6600GT does have SM3.0, but it's not really an issue, ust a selling point.

Your own opinion. I respect you for that. There are reasons why the business world still doesn't use AMD. Tell that to the corporate world. They will just start laughing at you.

I beleive intel's marketing power kills amd's, and is why the corporate world still uses mainly intel. I could be wrong, but money certainly has a way of talking.

I see that you have an AMD system. For gamers it's really not an issue using AMD systems. i've personally used AMD systems in the past while they do perform it's just not my taste it's all.

Most corporate computers do not update any of their drivers or what not. They just leave things as is. Intel does better at this solution. Intel processors are built to last as well. i've had broken several AMD chips just installing a heatsink. The quality isn't there yet.

Yeah, sorry about that..

back to the point of the thread, I won't say anything more other than the general concensus seems to be that the 6600GT is indeed the better card out of the X700 and the 6600GT.

Glen

No doubt about it. I would choose a GT as well if all I was doing was playing games.

But 90% of my time is used in 2D. I guess I'm just getting too old. :)

Yes I agree Intel always gives me peace of misn that my CPU is not overheating...WTF? Intel makes me worry more about the cpu not croaking then my AMD at 1.855v and it still only gets to 40c at load at that voltage with the STOCK heatsink. No fancy cooling for me.

again that is your opinion. As I have stated mine.

Intel has advanced CPU thermal protection than an AMD system. For instance you might fry your AMD cpu if you didn't have a heatsink but an intel system will not croak because of this.

Do some research please before opening up and say ahhhhhh,,,,,

Notice I didn't mention about heat issues and your already bluntly going down my throat. Your an AMD fan. As I like quality over speed.

You should probably take your own advice. Athlons added a thermal diode and protection from frying ages ago. They do not support thermal throttling like the P4 does, but you are unlikely to fry an AMD processor.

Do some reasearch please before opening up and say(ing) ahhhhh.... ;)

EDIT: Sorry for the off topic post. I just can't let FUD go by unchallenged sometimes.

Okay thomas you got me. :)

Why don't you try taking off that heatsink and fire up your athlon. if your so sure. :D

Notice how I said advanced thermal protection because I wasn't so sure on this. Intel quality is better whether you like it or not.

I would do it on my intel processor without hesitation.

Prescotts are running 20C hotter under load than my overclocked Winchester, for Christ's sake. And you are bragging about Intel heat management? Bitch, please. :p

I would do it on my intel processor without hesitation.

Since they overheat out of the box with the stock heat sink anyway, why not? :D

I think the comparison to amd and intel is interesting...seeing how AMD, the upstart...is kicking the crap out of Intel in gaming performance right now...:)

Well Gaming was not always Intels reason to make Cpus, they want to get Corporations and normal PC users (not gamers) to use their Cpus. In which case they have the upper hand due to smoother HT abilities and faster Photoshop and music riping CDR burning all that jazz. My self I feel that curently AMD and Intel Quality wise are par with each other. Also yeah you can take off your Heatsink and turn your computer on with an AMD system and nothing will happen (bad atlease) Ive done it with my 3200. Also Intel CPUs are good and all but overpriced. And if heat is the only thing they have got over AMD than goo ahead and buy intel but I stick with the AMD 64s (as soon as I get one lol!).

People, please get back on topic to what the original thread was about.

For what it's worth, 6600GT gets my vote over the X700 Pro.
