Now that I personally have played with the 6800Ultra and the X800XT I can say that they are both equally good.

EQUAL

While in the game you don't witness any differences. They both run HL2 at really high FPS that unoticeable to the eye unless you turn on cl_showfps.

They are both equally good in performance in reality.

No more bickering about which is better for me.

A lot of us concluded a while back that both are good cards and that it really came down to brand preference.

Screw them both.. I have no card cuz of there supply problem :(

*I second that*
I would buy the first pci-e one that comes in stock at crose to RRP (x800xt, 6800gt, 6800ultra).

I to have played extensively with an Ultra and XT PE. While gaming I really didn't notice a difference either. I had to turn on fraps in order for it to tell me the Ati was a little better with AA and AF on high.

I own both and Im still undecided. I like the 6800U when it comes to color and gamma correction out of the box. Its not as dark as the XT-PE where I had to raise the gamma alot in order to see all the dark spots in CS. On top of that the 4.12 Cat's and ATI Tray Tools dont get along all that great so I had to run a beta version of Radlinker. As soon as I launch a 3d app the color correction gets reset. I also like the vibrance setting that nVidia has in the control panel.
ATI has better image quality IMO and seems a bit smoother, but both rock no Q's about it.

Doesn't the colour/brightness also depend a bit on the design and quality of components on the board?
I've read reviews of different brands with the same GPU, and they noticed difference in picture sharpness and all that.

I've had my 6800GT since July.

e = q * p

enjoyment = quality of experience * time of posession

Yep, right on. ATi has an advantage on this, since they make an official ATi-branded card with good components on it. nVidia card quality is left up to the manufacturer, which can sometimes suffer with a cheaper card maker.

IIRC, Sapphire makes the official ATi cards, and eVGA is the closest manufacturer to nVidia (making reference boards for nVidia and such).

Several companies produce the card with the NV40 chip, they sometimes just change small settings such as cooling solutions and different heatsinks.

I have to disagree with the smoother part with ATi. I had an X800Pro and immediatley noticed a much increased smoothness when I upgraded to a 6800GT. The same was true for my X700Pro and my 6600GT. The 6600GT has been smoother in everything but Farcry. There I think that ATi owns in the smoothness realm.

did that make any sence to any1? u said u disagree then u said u agree at the end...which is it?

he lost me as well.

also before anyone says that ati AA is better than nvidia's:

ati's aa has gama correction which makes it look better than nvidias.

What I mean is that the ATi cards do not run games smoother. My Geforce 6 series cards have always beaten my ATi VPU's in smoothness. Reguardless of how the cards benchmark. My Geforce 6800GT gave me a smoother gameplay experience than my X800Pro. My Geforce 6600GT gave me a smoother gameplay experience than my X700Pro.

When I saw this:

I noticed under ATi he said it was smoother. Meaning smoother gameplay than Nvidia's cards. I disagreed. I never said I agreed with anythig anywhere in my post.

“I ... hate with a murderous hatred those men who, having lived their youth, would send into war other youth, not lived, unfulfilled, to fight and die for them.” Through this statement, U.S. novelist Mary Roberts Rinehart exposes a truth of war, that it is waged by older men, who send young men off to die. Through the ages, countless poems have been written about war. Some, like Owen Seaman’s “Pro Patria,” glorify war, depicting it as honorable and glorious. Other poems, however, such as Wilfred Owen’s “Dulce et Decorum Est,” depict the true image of war. They reveal that, contrary to being glorious, war is a disgusting and wasteful loss of life. Although both sides have some merit, those who refute war have the most credibility.

ok, i think its because the original post was actually just refering about the 6800Ultra and the X800XT which might be actually misleading. now i am not actually sure what they meant by smoothness, i would GUESS thats probably means that the average frames is higher or something like that. (ok i might be wrong) but i think that the Geforce 6600GT would own the X700pro since i reckon the x700 suck from the reviews i've read. also i can't be bothered checking up but the 6800GT is also a faster card than a X800 PRO. I duno how the price compares for these cards so u might be comparing them becuase they have similar price tag..
Lets hope that the x800 XL comes out and for 100dollars cheaper (well thats IF the 6800GT doesn't lower its price tag  ) and having similar performance as a geforce 6800GT (except doom3 :D )
