can someone help me with the proper steps on how to install my new video card.
im going evga 460 to an evga 570.

ive gone from ati to nvidia but never nvidia to nvidia, im sure i can figure it out just messing around, but i wanna make sure i take any and all precautions.
do i just power off and swap video cards?
do i uninstall current drivers before i sawp or after? (i currently have the nvidia BF3 beta drivers)
wil i even have to uninstall/reinstall drivers due to the upgrade being nvidia->nvidia?

Yeah just uninstall old drivers, shutdown, install new card, re-install display drivers.
 
windows was fucking me with automatic driver installs, would automatically install the geforce 260 drivers as soon as id restart to desktop after uninstalling.
I tried going into device installation settings and turning the driver update option off, and also tried turning off windows update, but it would still install the damn 260 drivers!!!

I eventually uninstalled the 260 drivers one last time through the device manager and selected the option to delete the driver files. Finished uninstalling, removed ethernet and restarted and this time when i got to the desktop it installed this "default video driver" lol.

Said to hell with it, and went ahead with the installation anyways, once i put the new card in and rebooted i installed the latest BETA drivers from nvidia and everything seemed to work.

ran the free 3dmark11 bench!
before- about 3800
after - about 6200

not bad :p
now to try some real games!
 
enjoy your upgrade. What games are you looking forward to playing in the coming weeks that prompted the upgrade in the first place?
 
well mostly for battlefield 3, hoping to play with everything at least at high with a solid 60 fps at 1280x1024 minimum.
Also Skyrim is coming, mass effect 3, and the new batman game should be interesting with physX and tessellation! (got Batman:AC free with the 570 :p)
 
In the beta, at 1280x1024 you would manage 65fps average and 45fps minimum at "Ultra" detail with both types of AA and HBAO enabled. Disable AA and AO and that'd rise to 110fps average and 80fps minimum - a sufficiently high frame rate to enable you to raise the resolution to 1680x1050 and preserve a 60fps minimum frame rate. Whether this will be possible in the full version however, too early to say.
 
I am sure the full version of the game will lower your FPS a little. I noticed a few changes from Alpha to Beta in FPS drops. This is something that you can adjust though so it should not make a bit of difference.

As long as you aren't cpu limited that should be easily achievable.
 
Back to drivers......

For your install, D/L the latest beta (especially for BF3)
In Programs, uninstall nvidia drivers,update and physx.

Put in your new GPU.

Then if you want, you can run a driver cleaner, but not absolutely necessary.

Load up your new drivers......I generally do a "custom" installation only the drivers and physx and update, not the 3D vision stuff.

Check the box allowing a "clean install"

Install. Reboot. Enjoy.

Some might consider it overkill, but there are plenty of people who use crossfire or SLI for 1080p. If you want to run modern games at very high detail smoothly, that's the sort of power you need. There are already at least 28 games which the GTX570 can't max out with a minimum of 60fps at 1280x1024. Granted, some of these cases are due to PhysX, but there are still in excess of 20 legitimate cases.

yaa i love the fact that with my sony crt pc monitor i can do what i want with resolution.
I can max most games at 60fps usually with 16x AF and at least 4xAA and some alpha AA.
is there a big difference between say 1280x1024 and 1080p with the same game maxed, and high levels of AA and AF?
i mean 1080p is almost twice the pixels correct?
 
Your computer is massive overkill for that resolution. I max out most games at 1080p on a similar system. I think that you would enjoy a 1080p monitor. You can pick one up for a third of what you paid for that GTX570.
 
i know i know! i guess im waiting for that godly monitor that beast all of the positive points my crt has.
i mean theres input lag? 1 native resolution (with crt's if im not getting enough fps i can drop the rez and raise the graphics :p ), something or other about colors, blacks and clarity.

i wish they made widescreen crt pc monitors lol :p
ive got mah sony xbr960 chillin here in its 34in widescreen glory lol.

maybe ill give 1600x1200 a shot!
anyone got that picture with every resolution on it for comparison?
what would be a resolution in between 1280x1024 and 1600x1200 if any within similar aspect ratio?
 
Apart from input lag, what's stopping you moving to an LCD? Input lag really isn't much of an issue with a lot of modern displays... With LED backlighting, LCDs really don't have any colour or black-level disadvantages compared with CRTs.
 
Yeah, input lag isn't an issue with most modern TN displays.

The one native resolution is the only real gripe imo but with a GTX570 you'll be able to max out most games at 1080p. There really is only a hand full of exceptions like Stalker Clear Sky or Cryostasis or Metro 2033.
 
yaaa but the thing i like is that at 1280x1024 ill be able to max games for the next year or 2 no problem! meanwhile i can bump the rez if im getting too much fps and vsync the badboy!

and if a time comes when i cant max a game at 1280x1024 with my 570, that just means it time to buy another one!!
haha, or lower the resolution a bit :p, idk ive been so happy at 1280x1024.

I was stuck gaming at 1024x768 with my 6800gt on the same monitor i got now till i was able to build a new tower last nov.
1280x1024 is plenty big for me, i dont know if i would get too much gain from buying a new lcd and being stuck with 1 resolution.

I remember back when LCD's first came out and how confused i was when people would abandon their CRT's for these LCD's with horrible image quality/ghosting.
Since then i still cant justify the need to go from CRT to LCD, probably going to skip this gen of tv tech in hopes whatever comes next is boss (has no negative qualities compared to CRT).

Only drawback with CRT that i feel other then space/weight is no WIDESCREEN at least in CRT pc monitors.
Widescreen is so cool lol, and kinda a shame im missing out but thats when i hook up my PC to my CRT television thru HDMI and run games at 1080 or 720 :)
