NVidia To ATI Convert Needs Experienced Help

Ok, I just bought my first ATI card, a 9800 Pro. This will be replacing my current Ti4200 in the gaming rig.

Other than uninstalling the Nvidia Display Driver, as well as the card itself, is there anything else I need to do (uninstall/delete) before making the switch?
I want the install to be as clean as possible, and clear out everything related to the Ti4200.

another bit of ati advice, always remove ALL of your ati drivers in between driver upgrades, and do it with add/remove software from control panel, don't trust the ati installer to do it automagically.

Best thing to do is use that driver cleaner program from Driverheaven. Then do a search for Nvidia to clear up any remaining Nvidia files. (If you have a Nforce2 MOBO, then don't do this. :p) Next, install the 4.7 Catalyst drivers from ATI's website. When you upgrade to new drivers, first use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall the control panel and display driver, second, search for ATI and delete any remaining ATI files, third, reinstall the new driver.
 
be wary of the 4.7's. I have heard people are having some issues with them...i'm still using the 4.6's and no issues...so i stayed of upgrading to the 4.7's.
 
OK, I'm having huge issues.
Uninstalled the NVidia drivers and the card itself.
Installed the 9800 Pro and the latest Catalyst drivers.
In hardware manager, it's listed as an unknown device. Clicking the little plus sign there shows two listings.
1) As 9800 Pro
2) 9800 Pro - Secondary

Going to run the cleaner posted above and report back.
 
My hunch would be that Device Manager is showing the 2nd VGA or DVI connector... no? 'course my experience w/ATI cardz is limited.

I don't think so. The first entry properties showed AGP, the second showed PCI.
I'm only using the AGP slot on that mobo. There's absolutely nothing in any PCI slot.

Anyways - ran the cleaner (both nvidia and ati), and reinstalled the drivers.
Seemed to work, but still shows as an unknown device with the 2 listings as mentioned above.

So I figured I'd push my luck and run 3DMark 2003. Apparently I have run out of luck for today. the card was horrible with tearing and artifacts.
FarCry was the same. Full of artifacts. (my Ti4200 ran FarCry beautifully)

Will RMA today and cross my fingers...:mad:
 
2 listings for a 9800pro is normal.
Try turning off fast writes, I had symptoms like you described until I turned it off.

I also have the two listings with my 9700 Pro. I believe that this is for dual monitor support and is completely normal.


 
yeah, you have separate drivers for each monitor output on your graphics card not counting the S-video, both primary and secondary.

heres an explaination of how or what to safely do, i have a 9700P btw.

1) download this program and read its readme : http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745
2) uninstall graphics card drivers from Add/Remove programs
3)right-click \"my computer\" go to properties, then click on the hardware tab
4)in the hardware tab click \"device manager\"
5)under the display adapter heading - click on the \"+\" to the left and expand that branch.
6)right click on you graphics card and click un-install. *note if your graphics card have multiple outputs you will have 2 listings for your graphics card you have to uninstall both graphics card listings.
6)reboot
7)while rebooting press f8 repeatedly
8 ) enter safe mode
9) enter your Operating system (usually only choice there is)
10) open Driver cleaner
11) remove ATI drivers (and Nvidia if you had one before)
12)go to tools, cab cleaner and run that (it is slow dont worry)
13) empty recycling bin
14) restart and reinstall (ignore the pops ups for \"new hardware detected)
15)after reinstall restart.

I do this everytime i change drivers, keeps everything working great.

yeah always disable Fast-Writes. i do this in Bios tho, so i dont have to disable it every time i change drivers. 4.7's cats worked great for me lil more perf than 4.6 but im running 4.9 betas at the moment you can get them from guru3d.com <good ogl perf too.
