Our friend David Kanter over at RealWorldTech.com talks at length about tile based rasterization in Maxwell and Pascal generation GPUs from NVIDIA.

Tile-based rasterization is nothing new in graphics. The PowerVR architecture has used tile-based deferred rendering since the 1990’s, and mobile GPUs from ARM and Qualcomm also use various forms of tiling. However, tiling has repeatedly failed on the desktop. In the 1990’s, Gigapixel developed the GP-1 tiled-rendering GPU, before the company was acquired by 3dfx (in turn acquired by Nvidia). The PowerVR-based Kyro desktop GPU was released in 2001, but STMicro cancelled the product line. [/QUOTE]

Was hoping they didnt have a license or whatever needed from Imagination, but looks like they are in the clear.

Talking about Imagination, I think they should try the desktop market again.

I remember reading something a while ago where it said that tiling tech works great in SLI/crossfire configurations.

Could be wrong though.

Aaannd this is exciting becaaauuusee...?
On other news I miss my Sega DreamCast.

Yeah, this isn't surprising since Nvidia is the only one of the two making a serious effort at embedded graphics parts. Adding on Tile-based rendering makes sense to optimize bandwidth and die space usage.

Nice to see David Kanter's site is still alive, although > 12 months between updates is pretty threadbare. At least he's still active on the site's forum.

What would be more surprising is that if this wasn't the case. Tile based renderers have their place, and IMO should be an option left up to the developer to use or not based on their requirements.

It looks like he might start doing his own videos, which should spread farther.

What's wrong with using tile based rendering? I actually think is very intelligent, saves on the required bandwidth. From an architectural standpoint I think Pascal is just a refresh of Maxwell aided by the node shrink. I am actually surprised that nVidia took this long to implement it!

Well yeah, but the other reason his site is mostly empty: Splitting my time between MPR and RWT

I was just cracking a joke at his "mostly dead" site. The forums are still active though :D

He's already been doing commentary on major tech breakthroughs, He's been on Tech Report podcasts several times as well, so he's already branching out from written media.
