Hi,

i just ordered a new MSI Gaming N780 TF 3GD5/OC GeForce GTX 780 3GB video card to replace my HD6970 I also have a HD6570 to run the 3rd monitor. I have 3 Dell S2740L monitors.

I was never able to run eyefinity because it would only allow 2 monitors into the group for some reason. I have to admit I did not spend a lot of time trying.

I saw this page. I'm just no sure if i'll be needing the adapters or not. Is it that I can use the surround in 2D without the adapters and plug them all into the one card with no adapters. Do you need 3D monitors to even worry about 3D surround? (I think the answer to this question is yes)

Please forgive me if this seems like a ridiculous question...

for 3d surround, yes you need 3d monitors.

for 2d surround all you need is a hdmi/dvi ports for each monitor.
you should be able to run two monitors through vdi, and the first through hdmi, with just one card.

but you're not going to be able to do surround with a 780 and hd6570.
these are two different cards.

you would need two 780s.

and if you're planning on gaming on surround you're definitively going to want at least two cards.

you mean to do any gaming in surround?

I wasn't planning to use the hd6970 or the hd6570 any longer.

I was just using the hd6570 to get my 3rd monitor going. I figured for the cost of just the adapter to get the 3rd moitor going I could have another processor and 3rd GB of ram on the 2nd card.

you really think 1 780 isn't enough to play games?

Yeah you should consider dual 770s if the 780s are out of budget. To really enjoy multi monitor gaming you need all the horsepower possible and that requires dual cards. Why run everything on low when you won't be very happy with the results.

I guess i don't game enough to justify another $420 card... I think if I were going to spend that kind of money I'd go for a titan or even a GTX 780ti.

However, if the price that the AMD cards are getting keep rising I could sell my existing card and buy another one!! ;)

Yeah there's a balance. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard scooping up a used 770 to add to the mix. I think you will accomplish both and be happy with dual 770s. Single card 780 is t bad either but multi monitor won't be a pretty to look at. If your competitive in gaming quality settings don't matter anyways.

A single 780 could run 5670x1080 60hz on low

Totally false. Lots of guys (including me) running single 780's for triple monitor gaming. Metro LL, Crysis 3, Hitman, Borderlands 2, Heavily modded Skyrim are all very playable on high settings.

OP, you'll do fine with a single 780, take it from somebody who is doing it right now.
