Nvidia superior in farcry?

I know. Not everybody has a problem with CCC in the first place, the same holds true for the stuttering problem on the 6800.

Except directly comparing them isnt a good idea.

You can choose to not install CCC.

You cannot choose for the stuttering to be there or not.

Playable is very subjective. As posted above, someone says 28fps is playable, to me, it is not. Especially when I would have to lower other settings just to use it.

In closing, I would get the XT/PE as a first choice. That being said if you can get a 6800U for $50 less or so, I would have a hard time not getting it instead.

He linked to a specific thread, about a problem that seems to be wide spread, over many games. Personally I only had it in a few games, and it wasnt that big of a deal to me. But to some people it is.

OK, let's get more specific,

http://rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33800052

Alot of people are having problems with CCC loading correctly. Does that mean everybody will? No.

I am giving my experience having had both cards, and I can honestly say the XT ran alot smoother. I don't like playing the beta driver game either. Trying 5 different driver sets trying to figure out which one is more compatible (still havent found one, using 67.66 now). You can't honestly defend that. I gave Nvidia a shot and it did not work out for me. Really, the cards are flawed. Something is going on with them and people like to bury their heads in the sand. They should be running much better than they are. Also the whole WMV acceleration kinda bothered me too. 80-90% cpu usage sucks! I have dual monitors so yes I should be able to watch videos and still have some functionality on my PC but can't.

I'm not defending Nvidia or ATI. Both camps have people who have problems with their drivers or hardware. I can easily choose another thread from Rage 3D with people having problems that are unrelated to CCC. I can easily choose another thread from NVnews with people having problems that are unrelated to stuttering. My point being that the guy who said "make sure to check out this thread and the 42 replies" or something along those lines makes it seem that it's a problem that every single 6800 owner is experiencing.

I would agree that if the main three games the thread starter plays are Far Cry, HL2/CS:S, and NFSU2, then an XT would be the better choice.

Everyone has problems with various hardware, this is true. The point is this is one major one that isn't related someone's ineptitude or particular configuration. It IS an issue for 6800 owners. Not all, but it seems prevelant enough to consider when making a purchase. I think things like this should be brought out, not sugar coat it and point to screen shots of what the card renders when you are standing still in game. Its something to consider. Most people bashing one side or the other haven't owned the card they are bashing. I am simply stating my experience. I am also pointing to a very big issue that isn't isolated and pointing out that fact as a consideration when purchasing this card.

I concur. Seems like it's prevalent among NF3/6800 configurations.

It seems to me though that nvidia is superior in farcry in every single way posible. The fact that the 6 series supports HDR rendering, and SM 3.0 is really tempting me to get a 6800 ultra.

what do you guys think?
I bought my 6800 ultra because you could never find a x800 xt pe. Far cry is soo much better with HDR and Digital vibrance. The ATI colors look so bland when you make the switch :p

For $500 and for the same performance, Nvidia is the better choice with more "future proof" hardware. Unless you upgrade every 6 months than this statement isn't valid.

Really? I just switched for a Asus A8V delux to a MSI K8N Neo 2 and I have no issues. I guess I am lucky :)

(I did have a bad motherboard though)

i have an asus A8V, and I can play HDR with pretty high settings and 1280x1024 with around the 50 FPS. But the thing is I have the extra cash, and I am bored of this 6800gt, so I thought why not use it? anyways I think im going to try out the x800xt pe just because I want to try out ATi's X800 series.

Mr Mean, you say that you truly saw a diff in colors with ati to nvidia? I didnt see much diff but got a little better performance. Can you explain for what I should look for?

I had both an X800Pro and a 6800GT. I've had an X700Pro and a 6600GT. The image quality in 99% of everything was exactly the same. NO difference. Period. The 6800GT is the better value over the X800Pro and even sometimes the XT. The performance difference between the XT and the Ultra is minimal at best. HDR is pretty cool and is usable provided you've got a really powerfull machine. Still if your not a Farcry fan it doesn't matter too much.

As far as the smoothness arguement goes, I've experienced better smoothness in all my games on the nVidia card. My X800Pro didn't feel nearly as smooth at all. In fact my X700Pro felt smoother than my X800Pro did. I think that comes down to driver and system configuration. Refresh rate settings make a good deal of difference as at 60hz UT2004 doesn't feel smooth on my 6800GT, yet when I crank it to 100Hz it does. (Through refresh force not the control panel.)

The X800XT-PE in AGP is becomming more available, especially since the announcement of the X850XT-PE. In PCI-E only the X800Pro seems to be attainable.

It comes down to preference. Get what you like better and what plays better for your games. Personally I think you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference in feel between a X800XT and a 6800Ultra if you had to take the Pepsi challenge between the two.. They are both damn fast.

First of all you need a good display. Mine a CRT monitor a CAD monitor with .22 all over the grill. You to set your color profile in the monitor to 93K (or whatever is the highest, mine is set to 11000K). Also turn your brightness to 0 and set the contrast to 100 (max).

First step make sure you have the updated monitor INF files and color management profile of your choice.

Now this is were it get fun. You now have to select a nice wall paper that is extremely colorful so you can see how to calibrate the video card to the correct desktop theme for your video card.

http://www.blizzard.com/war3/wallpaper/

I use this wallpaper ( http://ftp.blizzard.com/pub/war3/wallpaper/nightelfboxart-1600x.zip ) to calibrate my monitor. Now it's important you have patience at this because this will consume a great amount of time adjusting it for your monitor. The black on the wall paper must be black and the grey must be grey. You have to lower/increase brightness, contrast and gamma. Now you see the Digital Vibrance part in your nvidia control panel? Well you have to be careful with that :p Too much it will make things oversaturated and too little won't make things look colorful, so you must adjust to your liking.

This is my desktop settings for Nvidia card.

Desktop
DV- Low (10 to the right)
Brightness- 90%
Contrast- 107%
Gamme- 1.0
VMR
Brightness 122%
Contrast 125%
Gamma 1.16
Saturation 140%

This is my World of Warcraft profile

DV- Medium (5 tab to the right)
Brightness 101%
Contrast 120%
Gamma 1.00

This is my ATI profile

Color 0.75
Brightness -15
Contrast 110
Overlay
Contrast 120%
Saturation 150
Gamma 1.0

Now these color profiles WILL NOT be replicated identical to your monitor as mine. Your monitor is different than mine and probably won't require this. I am posting those profiles as examples to show you what to do. These are not the profiles that will work for everybody. You have to sit down and adjust it acordingly to your like/dislike. So this is a good time consuming adjustment. But when you get the sweet spot, the colors litterly jump out at you. Red look bright red, water in farcry looks baby blue it's perfect when you adjust your digital vibrance correctly. So remember those profiles I have listed work for me and probably won't work great for you. You have to sit down and adjust your monitor and your video card profile till it's perfect! Happy adjusting :)

To be honest either card by ATI or NVIDIA will most likely rock your world. Just take a look at various reviews and benching of those cards on all kinda of sites. For the most part its all pretty even give or take a few FPS here there.

Really the only repeating issue I see brought up by people and/or sites is the Pixel Shader 3.0 and SLI capability of the Nvidia cards. If these things matter to you then the clear choice would be to go for the Nvidia cards.
If you could care less about shader 3.0 and SLI then either ATI or NVIDIA is great!

Just pick a card man you really can't lose either way!

i think people are forgetting that HDR will be in other games such as Age of Empires 3 etc.

Don't forget AoE3 is also supporting SM3.0 w/ geometry instancing (should really benefit a lot from this), and since it is a Microsoft game odds are they won't support ATI's out-of-spec GI since MS is strict with adhering to their DX specs. MS already made ATI disable GI in their drivers in order to get WHQL certification.

Also, OpenEXR HDR in FarCry plays just fine as long as you stick to resolutions of 1024x768, 1280x960, or 1280x1024 depending on CPU and GPU speed.

So how many games that are OUT NOW uses these special features the 6800 have over the x800s? Its been almost a year now.

Remind me how long it took before a large amount of games took advantage of the 9700PRO's SM2.0?

Both are great cards. I would consider other things besides the 3 games you play.

1.) What future games will you be playing and what engine will they based on
2.) Will these games employ advanced features that one orboth cards can or cannot suppport
3.) Ease of overclocking
4.) resale value
5.) Do you run dual head and if so which card has a better multimonitor implimentation
6.) Do you run LCD or CRT, will you need dual dvi?
7.) what about next gen , how soon and what will it offfer

The answer was6800 Ultra when I asked myself those questions last summer, since then I have progressed to playing with sli and will again go Ultra (2x this time) once available through theEVGA step up program.

Oh and by the way , the step up program at EVGA will allow you some leeway on issue # 7 since you will have 90 days to play and step up to new gen if it makes sense

Good luck on whatever choice you make

Actually, the 6800 GT is FASTER in Far Cry than the x800 Pro, even if you ignore stuff like HDR.

lol yeah I was.

Well it seems there are many good posts here, and it seems to me that either way, I win.

SO this is what I think I might do. Ill finish beating farcry with HDR, (im al the last level) and then buy the x800xt PE since HL2 and CS:S willl run bettter on HL2.

That doesn't matter about out of specs. It still works and will work. Nvidia (actually every company) encounters the same problems in some sort for meeting microsofts whql standards. It's just geometry instancing. It's not looking at = Hmmm nvidia card...it'll work. You think farcry did looops to make sure geometry instancing only works on one card? No it just did directx specs. And since ATI wants the whql standards so "common" users don't get freaked out that it's not certified, they had to disable it on start up. Clicking a button will simply make an ati card enable it. So that's a moot point

Well, like I said not everybody has the stuttering issue. I don't. :) From reading around on different forums it seems like a lot of NF3 owners are whining about it.

I doubt Geometry Instancing will work in Age of Empires 3 with anything less than an SM3.0 since it is a Microsoft game, and Microsoft is the one who made ATI remove it from their drivers since it doesn't meet DX9 spec.

The problem is Geometry Instancing is only spec-wise part of SM3.0, which ATI doesn't support. So for Age of Empires, which has already announced to have an SM3.0 path, it is likely that the Nvidia cards will run SM3.0 and Geometry Instancing and ATI cards will run the SM2.0 path which will have no GI programming. Otherwise Microsoft would be violating their own decision which would look rather odd.

Whatever dude. You never want to listen to anything anyway. Just your own biased sense of thinking.

It works. It's been proven in Farcry. It's using DirectX standards for enabling geometry instancing. Directx 9 ati cards have supported geometry instancing for a long time now. Even if ATI has to go outside of directx9 sm3.0 standards to make it work, they made it work outside of WHQL standards which doesn't mean dick if it works. And once again..it's proven. Doesn't matter. The end. Crytek didn't even some new way of geometry instancing.
