Nvidia superior in farcry?

Ok so Im still deciding between a 6800U and an x800xt-PE, the most 3 games I play are farcry, HL2/CS:S, and NFSU2.

It seems to me though that nvidia is superior in farcry in every single way posible. The fact that the 6 series supports HDR rendering, and SM 3.0 is really tempting me to get a 6800 ultra.

what do you guys think?

Well if you can't wait, go with the 6800U. I have always been an ATI fan, but I picked up a 6600gt and have been blown away. Hell, if you don't like it you could always sell it once they start releasing more of ATI's line.

i love my 6800 but from the games you play it sounds like they will favor ati more especially hl2 and cs:s

Well I have a BFG 6800 Ultra WB I can sell you for 450 shipped. I will be honest and let it be known that 6800's have their share of problems. I don't buy into half the stuff people post about how awesome they are. The card I had previously (XT-PE) was much smoother in games and appeared to be more vibrant IQ wise. Just my opinion though...

I'm serious about getting rid of the card PM me if interested.

Well for the three games you listed the X800 XT or XT PE has a lead in performance. In NFS2 there is a big advantade for ATI. Just go for the best deal you can find.

Yea, it seems ATI x800 has a lead in farcry (in most cases), and in other games as well (ie HL2, NFSU, BF, etc). Id say check MANY reviews and benchmarks from reliable sources and compare.

Nah, I think ATI and Nvidia are pretty neck and neck in Farcry, well at least after the Nvidia patch.

According HardOCP's own reviews 1600x1200 no AA is max playable on 6800U, while X800XTPE can do 2xAA in these settings.

Its Tit for Tat with these GPUs and getting either one will not be a bad choice. Sjip the overhyped benchies and pick what has the best price/bundle for your money. Its all small talk besides that.

like at those resolutions youd even NOTICE 2xaa....just go for hte cheaper/more available, theyll both play todays game at insane settings..

I'd tend to agree with this. At that res, the vast, vast, majority won't see much of a difference with anything less than 4xaa (and some of my friends can't even tell at that).

That extra OMPH! will come in handy in future games. :D

For the three games you play, the XT/PE is faster. If you can get them for around the same price, I would get it. As you will get better frames in the games you play.

I cant believe people dont notice jaggies at 1600x1200.

I don't think anyone was saying they didn't notice them (although the friends I mentioned can't--though they also can't see the differnce from VHS to DVD), but for the performance hit that 2xaa usually engenders it isn't worth it for the slight increase in IQ.

Personally, I want a minimum of 4xaa (which is a very noticeable difference to me) or I'd just as soon keep the 'extra' frames that no aa allows.

Things you can't see on an X800XTPE:

Go with the 6800U.

Yeah, with horrible frame rates, and no AA. All the while looking too fake most of the time.

The XT/PE is also much faster in NFS: U2 which he said he plays.

Either the X800XT-PE or the 6800Ultra will do the job. Get which ever card you can for the best price.

Personally own both cards *well kinda*

For Farcry....X800XTPE
MUCH smoother in general and at higher resolutions. The openEXR HDR in the game is too much of a performance hit in general and is blown out.

Neither card is bad though.

good luck finding a PE lol especially finding the money for it, 6800U best bang for your buck and if you got money to throw around call up evga and order a 6800UEE

I love HDL on my nvidia card...Hope more games come out with that feature...

HDR runs just fine on my rig with the cold filter applied at 1280x960. That is with 71.20b drivers. I get no lower than 40fps.

6800gt 420/1120

The XTPE is a bullshit product. It isn't available to buy 99% of the time, and the 1% of the time it is in stock someplace, it is marked up to insane prices. All for a 20 MHz core overclock and 12% memory overclock? Fuck that... ulness you can get one for about $500, it is just so much jerking off. Why do people keep talking about the fucking thing?

x800 XT or 6800 Ultra are the high end choices you can actually buy, and the 6800 Ultra is more available. x800 XT is a little faster in alot of things and alot worse in one thing (Doom 3... and the big pile of future Doom 3 engine games). Flip a coin between those two.

The X800 XTPEs are actually becoming available from a couple of places in the UK now and at good prices. Obviously not ideal since the card's been out for something like 7-8 months, but you can get them if you shop around. The Ultra is much more easy to find still but sourcing either shouldn't be an issue if it's the one you really want.

Also don't forget to go here:

Start reading through the 42 pages and maybe, just maybe one of those suggestions will help with the stuttering on your shiney new 6800.

My card is still for sale too, I'll throw in a copy of Doom 3 since everyone says how bad ass 6800's are in that game....

That's like saying don't forget to go here:

Start reading through the ton of threads with people having problems and hopefully you won't have the same problems. If you do hopefully you will find a solution.

Each brand has their advantages and disadvantages.

-You get better fps in all those games with an ATi card
-Many people with both cards seem to agree ATi has better AA (I can't remember, personally, but screenies give you a good idea)
-HDR is a total gimmick, nothing more than a slider allowing you to increase shaders/lighting and you lose AA. (Anyone claiming AA is not important would be better off with a 6600GT/6800. People expect more than just to be able to play games when they buy the top of the line cards)
-SM3.0, according to [H]ard's own review, provides virtually no performance increase over 2.0b and in some cases, visually, they both look worse than 1.1! (Here's one of the reviews: http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NjA5LDM=)

For value, the 6800 GT is the winner. GT prices have been dropping steadily since people have been honestly looking at performance and ATi cards still carry a premium. Seen them go a few times for $320 and the cheapest ViVo->XTPE is going to be around $380-390. That said, I personally went with the XTPE, because there is a fair improvement in the games I play with an ATi card and AA was a primary motivation for buying the card.

Agreed there. Even though i really like ATI's cards. I think anyone would be happy with any of each companies high and cards provided they take the time to tweak it out for the games they own. ATI is markedly better in DX based games - NVIDA better in OGL. Both cover the spread ok when crossing over to the other side 'ok'. Games and frames are enough to make all games playable with fairly high res and refresh rates. 6800GT is a fine card.

Not with the settings I use. I dont like the cold filter, and I dont like playing with low game settings. It looks too fake to me, and no AA is just not acceptable.

The simple fact is HDR lowers performance, A LOT. Down to the 20's for me, with the settings I use. I dont like how it looks most of the time, and its not worth the low frames.

The XT/PE is easier and easier to find. ZZF had it for $509 last week, still may, I dont know.

He linked to a specific thread, about a problem that seems to be wide spread, over many games. Personally I only had it in a few games, and it wasnt that big of a deal to me. But to some people it is.

Getting back to the original question, that seems to be overlooked. The XT/PE plays the games he likes faster. That seems to be all that matters to him. The price of the two cards would be the determing factor to me.

Whenever somebody says nvidia is better at something you have to come carp(filter) up the thread, give it a break man.

I dont think he crapped on the thread, if anyone did, it was you. He gave his opinion on both cards which is what the guy asked for.

If HDR in far cry is not importatnt to you then id go with the ATI card. It seems to be faster than Nvidias offering in the games you state are most important to you.

Show me where I said something that wasnt true. I said to make the decision on whichever gave you the better price. How is that bias?

The original poster was asking which card would be better for the three games he plays the most. The XT/PE is faster in all three. He also said hes interested in HDR for Farcry. Which is a valid interest, as it created a lot of hub-bub.

Someone came along and posted some HDR shots, and said to get a 6800U. Completetly avoiding the other two games, when the XT/PE plays them better. Making a $500 decision on one game isnt very wise.

MANY (more so than not) who have a card that can do it, have said HDR isnt worth it. Its just really not usuable on the current cards, in Farcry. Perhaps if you lower all the other settings it is, but if you play with High, or Ultra High its not. My frames where in the low 30's, with no action. In the teens with lots of action. With it off, it was usually no lower than 40-50. That is not a good trade off to me. My res is 1680x1050, and I like the game settings on high. I am not going to have the game look like mush, just to turn on HDR, when I dont like how it looks in the first place. I like the idea of HDR, if it was just toned down some, usuable with AA, and didnt take a 50% peformance hit, or more.

OK, let's get more specific,

http://rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33800052

Alot of people are having problems with CCC loading correctly. Does that mean everybody will? No.

Yes HDR...not openEXR HDR

ATI cards can use HDR too.

those that cant get the CCC to work can atleast work around it using the old control panel.

I know. Not everybody has a problem with CCC in the first place, the same holds true for the stuttering problem on the 6800.

I think the 6800 series is slightly slower in Farcry. However it can do HDR lighting and the ATi cards can not. If you've got a beefy system, you can play with HDR on and it's quite playable in high resolutions. I can do it playably at 1280x1024 with the system in my sig. I get over 30FPS all the time. It never drops below 28FPS or so.
