Nvidia RSX Chip for PS3 @ E3

i still question this whole 7 cell 3 cpu core whatevermagic.. their is only so mutch of a game you can multi thread, especialy fps

Microsoft also supports Blu-ray. Both formats have adopted VC-1 as a standard codec. Longhorn is also going to be compatible. But back to point, MS is making a big mistake by not including at least one of the future HD optical drives. Shit, just put in Blu-ray and end this freakin format war.

I think you are mistaking vector for pipeline or something?
Vectors processing these days basically means SIMD (in the old days it was more like having the loop-logic inside the instruction itself, making the CPU eat through large sequences of numbers efficiently, but still very much in serial, not parallel like SIMD. These days there is no gain from having the loop logic encoded inside the instruction, because of the way decoding and out-of-order scheduling/pipelining works).
And SIMD by itself is no more or less predictable than any other type of instruction (except for branches of course).
Only the length of the pipeline and speed of the cache determine the number of cycles wasted in an unpredicted situation.
 
You lack understanding of parallel processing.

You do not multipy the speed of 1 processor with the number of processors. That's not how it works.

The system still works @ 3.2 Ghz. Only difference is that it supports threaded games so performance will increase a whole lot.

If a game is not multithreaded and you hooked it up to a cluster of 1000 processors working @ 4Ghz each, the game will still load as fast as a single 4Ghz processor.

The introduction of multi-core CPU's is to allow these consoles to perform different things such as d/l and communication and gaming simultaneously.

The difference between the Cell processor and the 3 CPU's is that the Cell can use your fridge or TV which has a Cell processor in it to help it work on tasks. So for example, you're playing a game and then for some reason you decide you want to d/l another game. Your game though is using all the Cell processors in your PS3. Well what does Cell allow you to do ? You can use your fridge's Cell processor if it's connected in LAN to do the processing for you.

I'm sure you understand the magnitude of Cell processors by now.
 
I'll be getting Nintendo Revolution just because I need to have Super Smash Brothers 3, Mario Kart, Zelda, Metroid, and the cool Nintendo exclusive titles. Then I'll get either the PS3 or the Xbox 360. I haven't used my Xbox too too much so maybe I'll give PS3 a try.

Seriously though, one difference between the XBox CPU and the Cell is that the XBox appears to have 3 conventional CPUs, while the Cell only has one conventional one, and 7 'helper' cores. See also my post here: http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1027686023&postcount=22
 
There hasn't been one technical mention of AA by Sony or Nvidia, and Anand mentioned that evey demo had some degree of aliasing, to an extent he considered unacceptable for today's games. The Xbox has embedded VRAM for great AA.. Perhaps Nvidia sacrificed the AA for better lighting effects? For example, in Far Cry you could turn on the HDR lighting only at the expense of AA as the technique as implemented was incompatible with AA.

Any thoughts on this? Lack of AA sounds like a killer to me. Alhough maybe if its necessary for the great lighting effects I can live with it.

Thoughts? Anyone hear different on AA... all I hear is silence from Sony and that may speak volumes.

im simply saying its by far cheaper. The PCB is actually one of the most expensive things to manufacture along with the ram that goes on it. Ram being the single most expensive component on a card. In consoles everything is hosted on 1 board, all they have to manufacture for video is a simple core (or complex) which will get incooperated to the completed system. Alot simpler then needing 256mb of DDR3 @ so and so speeds from one company, a core from another place at so and so speeds, and a PCB then testing it all. Thats just what the graphic card manufacturers do. Ever wonder how so many stay in business? Im sure if a list were made we could easily hit 10 by each ATI and Nvidia. 10 companies that essentially manufacture the same products. However core manufacturing is done usually in 1-3 prcoessing plants. You also cut out quite a lot of manual work hours through consoles compared to computers.

i think we are entering into a new era of game graphics

Oddly enough the Inq is reporting the Nvidia PS3 chip to have 10mb of embedded ram.
