WE WROTE this article yesterday but Nvidia has given us guidance on the subject.
Nvidia 6800 generation indeed has hardware video support up and running. It will work just fine if you download new drivers which are expected soon and will appear on its web site. You will need the Nvidia DVD decoder as well.

Some people already have these drivers and you can check our friends' web site which has already tried them out, here.

In answer to your story on 6800 having no video.

The GeForce 6800 models featured the 1st generation of our programmable video technology which includes support for high-definition MPEG2 video decode and standard definition MPEG2 encode, as well as advanced post processing features such as motion adaptive deinterlacing, and inverse 3:2 pulldown.

The GeForce 6600 models have the same 1st generation programmable video technology support as the GeForce 6800 models. However, the GeForce 6600 models also include hardware acceleration for high-definition Windows Media Video (WMV) decode.

In order to utilize the programmable decode and advanced post processing features of the GeForce 6800 and 6600, end users need to download an updated ForceWare driver as well as the NVIDIA DVD decoder.

The ForceWare driver will be available shortly on the NVIDIA.com and the NVIDIA's DVD decoder is already available for download from NVIDIA.com. For Windows Media Video decode on the GeForce 6600 models, end users will also need to download an update to Windows Media Player from Microsoft.

NVIDIA is also working with application vendors to take advantage of the programmable encode features of the GeForce 6800 and 6600. This feature just like programmable pixel shaders when they were first introduced, requires additional collaboration with application vendors. The first application that NVIDIA is targeting to support it's GPU encode capabilities is Windows Media Center Edition 2005.” Adam

Wait... isnt the Nvidia DVD Decoder um not free? If so WTF, I have to pay MORE to use a feature that is included in my 6800GT?

+ you missed the SMALL print, who cares about MPEG2 anyway? is not like is hardware intensive...

However WMV-HD is CPU intensive and thats what needs to be brougth up. As that article put it, anyone with a 6800 series card will not get HARDWARE ACCELERATION in any WMV-HD content (where is really needed) only 6600 cards will.

I really dont care much for it as my CPU is plenty fast for playing WMV-HD content, however anyone with a slower CPU will not be able to take advantage of this, for example someone with the following hardware specs:

P4 @ 2ghz + 6600 = good WMV-HD playback (hardware accel works)
P4 @ 2ghz + 6800 = bad, choppy playback (hardware accel for HD content broke/non-existent)

However they said MPEG2 will be just fine in either card (like a P3 500mhz can't already play a DVD encoed in MPEG2 already)
 
nvDVD might be on your card's driver disc. It is on my BFG 6800GT. It's not just a "decoder", it's DVD playback software.

Actually Nvidia came out with a new decoder that's just that, just a decoder. It needs a player on top of it (think of it like those dvd packs they sold for use with WMP).

No idea though if the mpg2 'advanced' features are usuable by the old NvDVD.

Too bad I, like so many other PNY Owners, did not recieve any Disc with my card.

actually it looks like he did read the article, as well as the thread over at NVNews. @ issue is the newer wmv/hd codecs, which nvidia claims to have support for on the 6800's but doesnot. Even with driver and codec downloads, the early 6800 GPU's will not use hardware to decode the newer wmv/hd codes.

Thats the issue. We already knew it worked with the older ones. We dont care, those are not CPU intensive.

nvDVD disappeared off their site. I think the decoder is just nvDVD minus the interface since it needs WMP9. And yeah, who knows if the "old" nvDVD even fully supports the NV40.

I've already registered my disgust in the nvidia forum thread I started.

they said that the 6800 have version 1 of the vpu, and that one dont support anything else but mpeg 2

Today, Fuad has received a little guidance from NVIDIA on the subject. Apparently all that was needed was new drivers, which NVIDIA is already working on. Oviously NOT "all is well". I bet you this is a carefully worded statement by Nvidia to try and make it seem like indeed "all is well". I hope they (Hardocp) does more investigation on this matter instead of reading and going with the "response given".

The main problem being than NVIDIA TOUTED and ADVERTISED this in many boxes, (I can take a picture of mine if you want) and did not deliver what was promised
 
WMV HD decoding I don't care much about. There is little to no content aside from demos encoded in WMV HD.

What I wanted the vid processor for was video encoding, hopefully they will be able to accelerate WMV and MPEG2/DVD encodes with some plugins.

So according to Nvidias' response to TheInq, it works -- it will take a driver revision to enable it though. Psh... we'll see.

Personally, I don't care. If I watch HD/WMV's it doesn't skip even at 50-80% CPU usage, and I won't be doing much less if I'm watching full screen HD formated playback..so... I could care less.

I hope they're right though in that it only takes a driver fix (and or a DVD decoder..which should be free, but; like I said..we'll see).

And I'm sorry for jumping on the whole "Did you read it thing" was a little irrational of me... just didn't make sense. Thanks Steel.
 
I can play dvds and any mp4 video on my celeron 767mhz which is comparable to a p3 600mhz, After that being said I still wouldnt worry about it.
