Will new drivers enable AMD cards to run Gameworks titles as well as Nvidia cards can? Hairworks and HBAO+ source code has been released to Github. This could be good....

The code released is apparently old code and not what Nvidia will perpetuate with newer Gameworks. Keep in mind HBAO has been around a while and they have moved to VXAO.

Yeah, just releasing some old outdated code that AMD has likely already optimized for.

What makes you think it is old code? The version of Hairworks released on Github is the version 1.2 alpha development branch, while the last stable version Hairworks released on 2015/12/06 is only version 1.1.1

My bad then. That is what I understood that the effects were old ones that they'd moved on from.

So have they actually released everything? Is the source for VXAO there as well?

NVIDIA makes source code for select GameWorks libraries available to developers via GitHub. Source code for NVIDIA Volumetric Lighting and NVIDIA's FaceWorks demo is available today. Source code for NVIDIA HairWorks, NVIDIA HBAO+ and NVIDIA WaveWorks will be available soon.

So far they've released source code for FaceWorks 1.0, VolumetricLighting 1.0, HBAO+ 3.0, and HairWorks 1.2 alpha. So at this point the one missing from their initial announcement seems to be WaveWorks.

According to this blog post, VXAO is just an extension of VXGI 1.0, which is one of the GameWorks libraries which NVIDIA has been integrating directly into the Unreal Engine 4 source code. Other engines seem expected to use the binary release of VXGI.

how or in what way would this be different than the amd tressfx?

Well if you want a recent example then the latest Tomb Raider. Purehair is tressfx tweaked, because it is open.
