Just seems like an option for devs to offload physics and AI calculations to the GPU.

AFAIK there is only one game on the way supporting GPU-physics, but I can't remember the name.
 
why did they have to call it that. when my gpu renders the image before it is sent the data then you can call it quantum effects

You are wrong. Here is the definition of quantum:
1. quantity or amount: the least quantum of evidence.
2. a particular amount.
3. a share or portion.
4. a large quantity; bulk.
5. Physics.
a. the smallest quantity of radiant energy, equal to Planck's constant times the frequency of the associated radiation.
b. the fundamental unit of a quantized physical magnitude, as angular momentum.

So quantum effects basically means a pirticular amount of effects.

Here I thought it was just a cool sounding word that marketing departments like to use!?:confused: I'm confused! It's all so uncertain.

I failed English, but from what I gather from dictionary.com "Quantum" can be used as an adjective in addition to a noun.

adj. Relating to or based upon quantum mechanics.

That said, quantum effects are nothing more then weird things that happen at sub-atomic level that normal physics do not explain.

Reviving the thread.

Anyone ever figure out what game supported this? I have a 680i MB and a spare 8400GS sitting on my desk and wonder if I should even bother tossing it in.
 
The game is Alone in the Dark 5 if I recall correctly and is due out next year. It uses the GPU to calculate particle physics for fire and smoke, plus it may use it for some object physics effects judging the videos.

Frankly I don't get why everyone is anxiously waiting for any game so they have a excuse to slap in a second GPU; games are already GPU hungry enough as it is to add physics onto the load, but there you go if you are interested.

Since it is out for consoles I don't see it doing anything to the level of the Havok FX tech videos, so a single 8800 GPU should be enough power for both the game and the physics.
