I'm going to be building quite possibly the best and most expensive computer I've ever owned in like a month. Being that amd dropped all of their prices I decided to go with amd. Now my question is.....Would it be wise of me to choose a newer nforce am2 board like the asus m2n32-sli or a skt 939 crossfire board. I definitely want two video cards in this system. I'm not too familiar with the crossfire boards, and some of these am2 boards look kinda iffy, and I hear they're really picky about ram. I'd be happy with either one really, but what I really want to know is if there is any performance advantage to one over the other. Recommendations????

I personally would go with the newer AM2 as well it is newer and nvidia chipsets are the way to go for AMD currently. Per the Ram issues just make sure the ram you purchase is D9GMH based and you will have no problems. Also what would help is what would you like out of the rig and how heavy will you overclock it. If you need help with the whole rig just give a price and we'll fill the holes.

am2 sounds good..... I actually picked out parts for an am2 rig too....what's the skinny on these am2 boards? I know the asus m2n32 sli is pretty good...what about others? I kinda had my heart set on having x1900's in crossfire as they are about $100 cheaper than the 7900gtx and just as good. SLi is cool I just like ati's graphic cards better. Are there any am2 sli dfi boards out yet? This will be my first time overclocking my processor, and I know dfi is notorious for their overclocking options.

Here's the system I came up with:

AM2 X2 3800+
Asus M2N32-SLi w/wireless
Corsair xms 2 x 1gb
bfg 7900gtx(will get the other one in october as a b-day present to myself :D )
WD 250gb sata hd
WD 160gb sata hd
audigy 2 zs platinum
Enermax libery 620W psu
Acer Ferrari 20" ws lcd
thermaltake mini typhoon cpu cooler

The above is very good just curious why 2 different size hdd's unless you already have one of them and how many of those parts do you already have?

Sounds great!!!

I don't have any of the parts....I'm probably going to be switching to mac for good. I was primarily a mac and pc guy. I really would like to build that system I listed above, but a mac seems so much more convenient. I'm more into music production these days and macs make that so much easier. I figure if I'm making music on the computer most of the time then I don't need a $400 video card or $200 psu. I'm eventually going to be getting into audio/visual art(setting visuals to music), kinda like making my own music videos but the visuals will be random. Anyways I'm done talking. ;)

hmmm i feel its a good thing i was lurking the forums today. Seriously dude, i would build the PC as if you need a mac to do anything on just get the dual core mac mini for 799$ ($749 if you find a student) and it will stomp any music app thats a universal binary. And the PC would provide the fun of seeing the latest games and bearing witness to what vista will have just around the corner. (which brings up another point, your making a critical error in buying two extremely expensive video cards when DX10 is just around the other corner and everything will take a small twist. I'd recommend just a x1900xtx if u want some top notchness). Anyways, if you've been staying mac and pc i'd recommend staying that way, because i (who works at a macintosh computer store lol) love having both to toy with. My mac laptop and my OC desktop.

however, if you do decide to invest entirely in Mac instead, inside tip, wait for the conroe based power mac coming out this fall quarter, it will have SLI.

**edit** btw, if you decide to stay with both, I would recommend an opteron 146 which OC's like a mofo on stock air from like 2.0 to 2.5-7 and lucky ones get 2.9-3.0, and get a card like x800gto2 or 7600gt. Nice things about the gto2, it leaves headroom for OC'ing (same ram as X850XTPE 1.6ns) and is 256bit memory. You could throw together a sweet PC with water cooling and a 20" LCD for like $8-900 and get a mac mini or macbook for $8-1100.

Think wisely.

You gotta point there....I really want a pc and plus I've got an empty Lian Li V1000B here. :D I'll probably wait until next year to get an intel mac since all the apps I use now aren't available for them as of yet, but they all work perfectly on windows. Since I'm going to build the pc now....are there any good non sli mobos available for am2 yet? DFI? Something not too expensive. I can't see myself paying over $200 for the Asus. I had an Epox 9NPAJ-Sli mobo in my last computer and that was the best one I've ever used. It only cost $100 too.

I would say you choices for a solid board is ASsu 570SLI one the 570ultra version biostar t-force and once the epox comes out I have heard it is supposed to be very good. Hope that helps you out some.

Does biostar make good boards? I don't know anyone who has one of their boards.... How is their support and oc'ing features?

not sure about biostar but i second the asus am2 mobo, asus has excellent warranty support. coupled with the good OC settings, its excellent overclocking support.

just a quick question about that. in my new build im going to have an asus 570 sli, and i purchased a x1900xtx to go with it, now will there be any performance loss since the mobo is nforce and not ati xpress?

by the way sweet build earl :D

You won't loose any performance you just will not be able to run CF

arent the am2 crossfire boards out?

I love my crossfire 939 board it runs sooooo much cooler than my nf4 board did.

overlocks like a beast too.
