Since my 4870X2 has up and died on me I'm tempted to go get a GTX 285 and the Nvision shutter glasses (I already have the Samsung 120hz 22 inch monitor) and play around with it for gaming but I have a few questions for anyone that has the setup or atleast has spent sometime with it.

1. If you already wear glasses can the shutter glasses fit over them? And if not do the shutter glasses offer a focus feature for those with impaired vision?

2. Is it worthwhile? Do enough games support it to make it worth getting at all?

3. I will returning my 5870 XFX to get the GTX 285 .. is that a large downgrade and possibly so much so that it would negate the coolness of having Nvision?

My bad if I put this in the wrong forum , if so mods I apologize and could you guys move it to the correct one? Thank you.

Do not get a 285 right now, they are severely overpriced and their performance is lower than that of a 5870. If your heart is set on 3d vision then you need to sit on the money and wait until the fermi cards come out.

Hm tough position. If you need something right now then the 5870 you have already isn't bad because iz3d has beta shutter drivers that would work on any Direct3d card once they get them finished, and Bit Cauldron has some nice looking shutter glasses coming in ~6 months for AMD cards. Also the cheap eDimensional glasses might work right now, don't see any reason they shouldn't.

If you want to wait a little bit still and will be able to afford a Fermi then that would get you 3d for sure.

So best options are, use the 5870 now and wait 6 months for Bit Cauldron glasses, or wait ?? months for Fermi..

1. it really depends on the shape and size of your head, as well as your glasses. I don't wear glasses but I imagine that regular glasses would fit under them ok.

2. Again, its really personal preference. any game that uses 3D can use it. Some are supported better than others, but in my experience, just about everything works with some fine tuning.

3. as others have said, I'd wait for Fermi to be released. Buying a GTX200 series card isn't a very sound investment. However, if it's something that you want now, then by all means... go for it :) Just go with EVGA so you can step up to a fermi when they are released.

Sorry I meant 3D vision obo heh , well I have been waiting for the fermi for quite awhile now. This entire idea has been on my brain since I got my 120hz Samsung monitor around august last year , at the time I thought Nvidia would have had its new series of cards out by christmas but we all know how that went.

I guess I just feel like 3D gaming is no longer a gimmick , it has matured enought that from what I've heard it can really enhance the gameplay experience and I would get a GTX 295 but no one seems to have them anymore (heard a rumor that Nvidia has basicly stopped production on them) because I know performance wise its atleast a 5870 if not a bit better in certain games but thats all subjective to the benchmarks you agree with.

generally speaking the GTX 295 is one of the fastest cards made and would be right up there with the 5870, 4870X2, and GTX 285; however the entire GeForce 2-- series its about to get replaced so if thats what you really want, wait it out is my best advice

I have read some posts regarding a 3D feature available from AMD, but really have no information on it beyond that, if you have the 5870, I would expect it to support whatever upcoming feature - the question is just time (who gets what faster, basically)

theres also 3rd party options as a few people have mentioned, again, thats a waiting game

ultimately I think regardless of *What* you want to do, all you can do today is wait:
1) Fermi + 3D Vision - waiting for Fermi
2) 5870 + AMD 3D (???) - waiting for AMD tech
3) 3rd party solution - waiting for that

unless you do end up buying a GTX 285 for 3D Vision, but I agree with most posters, thats not entirely cost effective (it really wouldn't be a huge performance hit, but the price for the card isn't "Great" imho, and it'll chug down more power than your 5870 for equal or lesser performance)

Well after looking at alot of benchmarks across the net its pretty clear that the GTX 285 gets blow away by the 5870 and even the GTX 295 has trouble keeping inline with it which is crazy. I'm able to run just about any game I have perfectly and I wish ATI would announce some more concret plans to support 3D because if they would atleast provide some more info on it I wouldn't have any quams about keeping the 5870.

In some of these benchmarks 2 GTX 285's can't keep up with a single 5870 which really makes me NOT want to get one . I suppose after I thought about it more it makes more sense to wait for fermi and see if I can perhaps sell my 5870 when it comes out and do it that way. Its too bad getting a GTX 295 through retail channels is pretty impossible at the moment , otherwise I wouldn't mind returning my 5870 for that card at all.

if your motherboard supports it, 2x GTX 275 will be roughly equivalent to a GTX 295
probably equally expensive though

you could also get into Tri-SLI configs with GTS 250, 260, or GTX 275
again, expensive, power hungry, etc; and motherboard support required
