The folks over at xdadevelopers believe they have evidence that Nvidia is working on a new controller and remote for the Shield TV. This isn't really that exciting by itself if you ask me. However, the xda guys are speculating that this could well be a hint that Nvidia is working on a new Shield TV with an upgraded SoC. If that's the case then this rumor will be welcomed by the community of Shield TV owners.

Since the code-names appeared in public source release, NVIDIA doesn’t deny their existence. However, they cannot confirm if the code-names are for products that are planned for production. If NVIDIA really is working on a new SHIELD Controller and SHIELD Remote as the code suggests, then I would wager they’re for a refreshed SHIELD TV product and not the current model.
 
Well, why not? Nintendo is going to upgrade to X2, so it's a clear path there for Shield TV too.

The latest Apple TV runs circles around the Shield, both CPU and GPU. It doesn't help that Nvidia saddled this with Denver 2 (instead of A73), but hey, they might be able to work some miracles with their custom ARM compiler (for the PC game ports, and any other Nvidia-custom code)

If only they'd bring back the shield tablet.... I bout one of the K1's YEARS ago, and its still the fastest android device I own. My 12 yr old now has it and he plays every game under the sun on it. Its amazing how powerful the K1 chipset was/is.

They stopped making the tablets because it's basically a Nintendo Switch with the controllers removed. Nintendo is going to release the X2 later this year, so again they would be competing with the massive gorilla.

The high-end set top box market is still mostly untapped. Apple has made some noise recently with their new all-you-can-eat games service, but we will see how well it actually works on Apple TV. If it's not popular, it may not be around for very long.

I had the original Shield handheld and the tablet - great devices (the tablet died when I let my kid take it over).

I'd like to get the Shield TV, but it's an aging platform and I feel like it's either going to die or be refreshed - hopefully a refresh but either way, I'm holding off.

Well, Pascal decode block supports 8k 10-bit, but they would have to change the silicon to add HDMI 2.1 , as the chip is about two years old at this point.

But it would allow you to down-sample an 8k stream on a 4k set.
