Nvidia introduces mobile SLI!

Probably not... but, it is just not right. Most desktops don't have SLI, let alone a DTR notebook. Crap, what do yo need that kind of power for in a DTR????

Powerconsumption might not be much of an issue. DTR's are made mainly for desktop to desktop portability, not for working on the go like the notebooks. Some DTR's don't even have batteries!

So how do you suppose they're gonna fit two 6800's on a DTR?

And when are we will have sli on our mobile telephones......????(just jocking...)

I want SLI on my Cellphone.

So I can play Poker IN BRILLAINT 500 BAJILLION FPS ANTI-ALIASED BRILLIANCE

Crazy..

How high of a resolution do you possibly want on a laptop? On an LCD mobile screen, would 4xaa 16xaf even be that noticable?

Battery life would be like 90 minutes max.. and what about heat? The coolers for the things would automatically increase the size of the notebook :-/

I think they're just doing it cause they can = gimmick. Unlike desktop SLI where the only barrier to entry is a fat wallet, SLI on laptops is kind of hard to swallow given the power requirements and cooling restrictions.

Do the DTR's with SLI happen to be about... 8" D x 17.7" W x 19" H...with a screen on top?

Remember though a lot of the 17" laptops now have 1920x1200 native resolution.

That res would hurt on games like FarCry, Quake4, MOH:pA, Everquest2, etc. Certainly couldn't run Doom3 at that res with AA enabled unless you had SLI. For such high resolutions you do need SLI if you want to run with everything on for all games. Its questionable tho whether you need such extreme graphics on a laptop, but hey what the heck ;)

Uhm, not just that, even the more standard resolution laptops benefit from it. I mean, seriously, what do you mean "On an LCD mobile screen, would 4xaa 16xaf even be that noticable?" Of COURSE it's noticable. LCDs are clearer, so it's even MORE noticable when you have jagged lines and such.

Either way, you do have to run it in full resolution or it's going to look like crap. I can see definite advantages to SLI power. Even a 1280 laptop is going to have troubles with new games coming out in just a couple of years or so. You spend that much on such a system, you WANT it to do well...

the laptop you get comes with a long cord to hook up to a nuclear powerplant. gift from nvidia
:D

my 9800 powered laptop gets too hot as it is
youll need to put the lappies in an ice chest just to use em

heat, added weight, added size, low battery life........i don't see what you guys are complaining about!!! :p

it's all about performance baby!

seriously though, they should make it so that one card shuts off when it's running off the battery. then when your at home or at a LAN plugged in the wall, the second card kicks in for sweet, sweet performance. :D

lol.....i could imagine someone getting a car power kit for it and when they turn it on, the car stalls.

The target are DTRs, they don't have the same strict power and weight limits as notebooks. :p

Just don't put that thing on your lap if you ever had thoughts about having kids, or having more kids.

I've been saying for awhile Your going to need microfusion reactors to power things if nVidia keeps coming out with this rediculous shit.

Quake 4 I can't vouch for, but I can play Far Cry, EQ2, AND Doom 3 with AA at 1920x1200 without frame-rate dips on my 6800 Go @ 333/666

Even if this is real, it's still pointless as a technology at this juncture because nothing is truly optimized for SLI coding. Perhaps if we saw some tangible benefits right off the bat, then I'd be more willing to even consider this technology in a notebook system.

I see them disabling one card and the pci-e lanes, then underclocking the other for mobility. But the DTR laptops are not for doing work in the park. They are for bringing your main computer from work/college to home (mine is). Having SLI as an option eliminates the delta between Desktop and Laptop. Don't forget the new 19" screens *drool*.

Besides price and lack of dual-core/AMD laptops (I hate manufacturers), is there any reason not to buy a laptop?

QFT, right before I die laughing!!

Please, ATI, just LET them have this round! Show us you still have SOME boundaries!

No, But those are two biggies right there.. For me anyway.. I'd be suprised if they could keep the price much below $4k on that, if at all.. Unless they go with 6600's, which would be pointless..

These things do have a place in the market for those that can afford, and want them..
To each their own..

voodoo laptops are 4000. and thats a single card solution . sli laptop? voodoo if they choose to do it would be more like 8000

QFT - Voodoo is charging mind-boggling amounts for underperforming notebooks...

laptop in sig..gives me like less than an hour battery life and is hot as fuck lol

Why do people bother posting crap from Inquirer... like the BS ATI multi-VPU board they recently pictured.

You do know that is coming don't you, Can't remember where I read it but Motorola and Sony Ericsson are gonna be first out with 3d gpu's built into mobile phones. Both ATi and NV are bringing them out lol

You can get some pretty cool 3d games on symbian handsets tho :D
