Hi all,
I just purchased this system

for my son and I want to upgrade the on board ATI RADEON X200 graphics to a Geforce 6600GT. The documentation from Gateway stated that they "strongly recommend" using an ATI based video card when updating. I called Gateway and asked them why and was told that any NVIDIA card will not work in this system. The motherboard is a MSI RS480M2-IL.

Excuse me for my ingorance but this does not seem correct. Could someone shed some light on this and let me know if it is possible to install this card in my system?
Also, my system has a 300 watt power supply is this enough to power the 6600GT?

this is a wild guess but i know some OEM manufacturer atleast used to use proprietary power supplies and motherboards (atleast as far as the power was concerned)...maybe that has something to do with it?

Edit: that still doesn't really make sense though :(.
 
Edit: Ahh I see its PCI Express X16 slot for graphics, should still work with an NV card tho.

As for your power supply, it may be a bit weak to handle it but there is no real way of knowing without adding up all the power requirements of the components in your system, having said that, I would tend to think that a 300 watt may be a little weak for a 6000 series card but you may get lucky and it will work fine.
 
it will probably work fine with that psu...anyways..I think they say it wont work because of the already installed ati drivers that came with the system....I guess they think you won't know how to modify and uninstall the drivers to get a nvidia card in or someting..anyways ofcourse it will work.
