i was gonna buy gtx 770 but i saw the r9 290 at the same price range. just wondering what card should i choose?

any reason for getting older generation cards? What price range? Might be easier to find and buy if you look at RX 470, RX 480, and GTX 1060.

Off the top of my head without price and other context, I would recommend a R9 290 AIB, since reference runs like absolute garbage. I think AMD runs better in general in terms of older cards as well, but I may be quite wrong, so I'll wait for someone more knowledgeable to answer that.

Most agreed after using an R9 290 reference card for a month I had to switch to a cooler that was not a jet engine. As mentioned above if you can buy an AIB 290 that would be great or one of the other cards mentioned. The 290 Ref is far from ideal for quiet gaming.

Well lets try to answer the OP question should we?
The 290 Ref will be substantially faster then the 770. Not even close. And that gap gets even wider if you consider DX12/Vulcan. I would assume it has more memory as well (most 770's were 2GB cards)?
If i remember correctly there is a switch on the 290 series that set it to uber mode or something, in which the fan could get loud. having it on the regular mode the fan is fine.
Check out the review here on [H] if you have questions.

should i just get a rx 480 instead

Either of those cards for $50 is a good deal. A 290 for that price is a smoking hot sizzling deal. So long as you know the 290's history, wasn't used for mining for the last couple of years 24/7, has been pre-sizzled and is on its last leg.

As a matter of fact $50 for a 290 is suspiciously good. Ask a lot of questions. I mean, it's in the realm of possibility. But you could buy it, sell it, combine that with the money you saved and buy something even better good.

So beware. I declare.
