Nvidia Drivers will not install

I'm trying to remain as calm as possible, but so far that's a bit of a struggle.
My new 8800GTS 512 arrived 4 hours ago. Physical installation was a breeze. Removed all the drivers and registration keys and excess files for my old ati card and rebooted with the new nvidia. No problem, at least not initially.

The first thing that I noticed wrong was that the PnP was not detecting the card as an nvidia 8800gts. Rather, it lumped it in as a generic vga. I figured, OK, it will probably change when I install the drivers...

Every single time at 50% of "installing driver components" the install stops for no particular reason whatsoever. Trying to reinstall it tells me that I'm not even running vista 32 bit, which I am. BFGtech support couldn't give me a solution, so now I am posting here.

2 tips:

remove the video card, and use your ati card to go into windows vista, and go to device manager and "remove" the display adaptor.

go into safemode, and run the driver cleaner again.


if this does not work try re-installing windows vista.

if this does not work, try asking yourself hte following questions:

do i have enough power? atleast 450W PSU recommended.
is the power connected to the video card?
is the video card SEATED properly in the PIC-E lane (push it down a bit more)

If I do a reinstall can I just have it reinstall the windows core files? In other words, do I need to worry about losing all my documents?

no, you wont loose your data unless you format your HDD

The reinstall did it! PnP picked up the card flawlessly, automatically installed the latest forceware drivers. Thanks for the help!

As far as Im concerned you would have to reinstall programs...they write info to the registry and might have additional files located in the Windows directory...reinstalling windows uses a new registry and new Windows file...your programs will not work without all the old stuff.
