Hi, all. :)
Quick question:
Newer nVidia drivers have been preventing me from doing triple-monitor... so, I'm trying to use the 306.97 drivers, but they CONSTANTLY auto-update. I can't get the auto-updating to stop. Any ideas?

They update about once a day (or every other day), completely out of the blue... I know an update has just taken place when Windows suddenly makes the "new hardware detected" sound, and my secondary displays go black. I tried renaming nVidia's entire Display.Update folder, and I did the procedure where you tell Windows to stop installing device drivers along with Windows Update... so, I don't know where these updates are coming from.

It seems nVidia has some REALLY elusive update thing going on. Anyone know how to stop it?
Thanks!

you could have your firewall block the updater, if you have nvidia experience installed there are options to tell it not to install drivers. I would check and make sure the newer drivers are not in the nvidia folder on c drive, might be installing on reboot.

The 306.97 drivers are from before nVidia Experience (pretty sure, at least), and I have no idea what updater is running. :( The drivers have an update folder, which I renamed, and I combed nVidia Control Panel for options, but couldn't find anything... That's why I say there seems to be a very elusive updater, somewhere.

Download latest driver manually. Click custom install and check clean install and uncheck nvidia experience. This should uninstall it during the installation. Then go to your older driver and hit custom click clean install and install. Worth a shot.Did u check add/remove programs for nvidia experience ?. If not for nvidia experience iI don't know why it would auto update. Unless stupid windows is doing it with auto update.

Uninstall auto update and nvidia experience. When you install new drivers do a custom install and uncheck both of those.

I'm not sure what drivers are being offered on Windows Update at the moment, but if they are newer, are you sure that isn't the cause? Do you have windows set to automatically update drivers?

To check, go to System Properties, Hardware Tab, "Device Installation Settings".

When you first install an Nvidia driver, it will also install several other components by default (ie, Physx, Nvidia surround, Nvidia update, etc). Next time you install a driver, choose custom install and it will show you all these components as options where you can select/unselect them. Simply unselect Nvidia update before the installation continues and it will not be installed. In the meantime, as stated just uninstall it from the program list.

Easy fix: Try 1-3 first, or 4 if 1-3 do not work.

1) Uninstall nvidia update (not sure if this is in uninstall programs)
2) If step one is not possible, run msconfig, go through your startup programs, and uncheck nvidia update
3) Uninstall geforce experience
4) If 1-3 give you difficulty, reinstall the driver from scratch, choose clean AND custom install, and be sure to uncheck geforce experience and nvidia update. Proceed with driver (re)installation. Problem solved.

Thanks for the help, all. :) It seems to have been resolved simply by turning off Windows Update. I could've sworn I was seeing all the updates that were coming through, but I wasn't, and video card updates were among them. Apparently, Windows Update on Win 8 can be *absolutely* stealth... no notification anywhere that anything at all is happening.

Didn't know that. I thought it always made you confirm before installing. I'll keep an eye out on this in the future as I don't like surprises.

Thx.

Control panel> System and security>windows update> select your preferred option.

nvidia drivers> download> custom install> do not pick nvidia update

problem's solved.:D
