Nvidia Driver failure

So, odd issue that I'm hoping to find an answer for. Every time I reboot my PC and go to play a game, the first time I fire up ANY game the driver for my GPU fails and resets. After that things play just fine. It's not a "show stopper" of an issue, but it is annoying that I have to force close whatever game is open then get back into it.

I have already tried to uninstall/reinstall the latest drivers.

I'm currently running a EVGA GTX970 with PrecisionX16 and GeForce driver version 358.50.

Issue happens when card is at stock or OC speeds/voltages.

Issue has been persistent for about 8mo now and I've just been ignoring it, but hoping someone has seen/experienced it themselves and may have an answer.

List of games this is seen on thus far: Witcher 3, Dragon Age (all 3), Skyrim, Borderlands 2, C&C Red Alert, Star Wars Battlefront Beta, the new Rainbow 6 beta, and others.

Thanks!

To help you troubleshoot users would need to know your:

Power supply and its relative age.
Windows version.
Temps that your card is running at when it crashes. Possibly the clock speed since Nvidia cards are dynamic.
Maybe resolution.

Unfortunately I don't own one of the newer Nvidia cards right now. But I'm sure that with a little more information someone will chime in and help you.

Try removing PrecisionX.

I had similar issues with my i5 rig running the 780 that I eventually just pulled PrecisionX. Random initial boots or in game would cause a driver failure. I put on afterburner and the machine runs with zero issues ever since.

You might also want to try uninstalling the drivers then running a driver sweeper type software to make sure nothing is accidentally hanging around. My money is still on PrecisionX.

Once the driver has reset, it is using default/reference clocks which are often slower.
Then it works fine for you.

This suggests you have an overclock that is unstable.
It could be a manual overclock or a pre-overclocked card that is getting too hot.

Give your system a good clean, that may sort it.

Agreed. Precision X is most likely to blame. Replace it with MSi Afterburner.
