I am at the end of the rope here guys.

I get driver crashes all the time.

I have tried every driver revision I can find, different video cards (old 8800gts)

I have reinstalled vista twice with no change at all.

I have tried every method of installation I can think of, (i.e. driver cleaner, safe mode install)

This is driving me absolutely nuts, please help.

More details needed...when does it crash, in a game, on the desktop, encoding vid files, what?

Does it blue screen crash, or does it crash explorer then recover....

MORE INFO :D

I've been getting this too. I just had one not 10 seconds ago out of nowhere. My screen turned black for a couple seconds then turned back on with a message stating that the card has errored but then recovered. Very annoying. I have had this midgame as well where the screen will halt, turn black then drop me back to the desktop with that message being displayed in the taskbar.

essentially the same as cantakerous.

It mostly crashes in game, but I was gone in germany for a week, and it seems to have crashed on the desktop while I was gone. No bsods, just a "your display driver has stopped working and recovered" which results in a game freeze, black screen, and then the game resumes like normal. My temps get up to about 58c. I have downclocked my card as well. This is using the 169.25 whql drivers.

Out on a limb here....both of you running Vista? I see one of you is...and if you are, have you applied the SP1 Beta?

I had this issue occasionally...but it has NOT happened since SP1 was installed a few weeks ago....and this pc gets lots of gaming time between me and my 8yr old...

i've been getting this error a lot too. the error says nvlddmkm stopped responding and then it recovers... yes i'm using vista.

I am using vista x64 too. I just applied the sp1 beta and it isn't crashing as much. But still at least once or twice every hour or so when gaming

I have this problem every so often as well - always while in game. In fact for me it only happens in certain games and at EXACTLY the same spots in the game. I have yet to figure out the commonalities however.

Stranglehold was working perfectly fine, but I was just testing some graphical settings on CoH: OF (latest version) and it crashed- it was a bad crash too. Gotta say that I like Vista a lot better- hell, XP would have been down for the count after CoH crashed but Vista tried to maintain stability even after that. However, the graphical crash was just too huge and caused it to automatically restart. At least it wasn't a BSOD, but this felt worse- it also had additional impacts on programs like Windows Live Messanger- no idea how or why, but it lost my log-in info and wouldn't let me log-in upon restart. In fact, almost nothing worked when I restarted- had to restart again to get things working.

it happens the most for me when playing day of defeat source, at random times. i've tried everything to fix it.

I have been getting this same error using an 8800ultra on XP Pro (32) while playing the game ArmA. Totally lost on this one...

I am using Vista X64. I have tried 169.21, .25 and .28 and it still does it. I don't recall this ever happening on XP 32bit for the 3 months I used my Ultra on it. I have lowered overclocks on my card that were 11h stable in AtiTool artifact scanner and it still does it.

mobo: eVGA nForce 680i SLi
vid card: 2x GeForce 8800 GTS in SLi config w/169.25 forceware
power: corsair 650w

I just installed my second 8800 in SLi yesterday and I get the Display Driver Stopped Responding and Has Recovered - nvlddmkm error message when I start Crysis, Bioshock, and TF2. The screen goes black and I see the task bar with the error bubble.

I tried COD4 and it worked fine.

I have had the same set up minus the extra video card for three months and I never received that error message.

I even tried to apply the kb938194 hotfix as it describes the problem but I get a message that the fix doesn't apply to my system.

rather frustrating.

I have the same problem - as do a lot of people.

Google nvlddmkm and take a look at all the articles.

I have two BFG 7900GTX on a BFG 680i Mobo, Core 2 Duo Extreme and OCZ reaper 2gb kit.

I get the nvlddmkm error or the comp just locks in WoW in SLI.

ugh this shit is really getting rediculous. is this nvidia's problem to fix or microsofts? they better do something about this soon cause im really getting pissed.

It's nVidia's by way of Microsoft completely restructuring how drivers interface with the OS in Vista (though some of you guys are reporting issues w/XP, so this issue likely goes beyond just Vista's restructuring).

I agree this is totally ridiculous. Has anybody talked to nvidia's tech support, or your gpu manufacturer?

I called eVGA and the guy told me to uninstall my drivers and reinstall them in safe mode. It worked! Crysis, TF2, and Bioshock all worked like they were intended to.

weird fix

:D:D:D

How does reinstalling them in safe mode differ any from installing them on a regular windows account with administrator rights?

I do that every time I install a new driver. Hasn't fixed anything

I think I have fixed my problem now. I loosened up my ram timings and now I haven't crashed yet.

You probably have less programs running and hence less chance for something to interfere w/the installation.

think it is because there is no network connectivity also. Vista will try to automatically install new drivers otherwise.

and after 24hrs I can say for sure that loosening up my ram timings to 5-5-5-16 has completely eliminated the problem.

wow. interesting fix... if my problem occurs more often I may look to loosen the timings...but right now I am keeping 5-5-5-15 and am gonna cross my fingers it doesn't happen often (so far so good though)

When I am going to install anything I log into the Administrator account then install. Not just a right click instral as admin.

Have had no problems for almost a year now.

I get this too on a non-OC AMD 5600+/4GB RAM/EVGA GeForce 8600GT 512MB (512-P2-N757-TR) and a brand new Vista64 install. I tried several different versions including the disc (Should be much older)

No event log. Just the typical: "Display Driver nvlddmkm Stopped Responding and Has Successfully Recovered." error or completely crashes or just stops displaying. I can just be idle to or light processing. It's bullshit that this made it out of QA.

Well not really, considering people like you experiencing this problem are probably .0001% of people using the products at this point. It would've been closer to 100% earlier on when the drivers were notoriously shitty, but this isn't the case anymore.

Ahh. Well, I am not sure how many units they sell but Google has a 100+ page thread on the Nvidia forum. Forum after forum of people bitching. I'd say that's a problem.

Ah well, genius, the interweb is a very dynamic place, though it doesn't tend to clean up untruths. You could have problems at 1 point in time, fix them in the drivers, and months later have people go digging and still find the forum threads and state something is severely wrong!

Such is the case with you. As I stated in another thread, something is wrong with your computer. Seeing as other people have 0 problems, it's pretty much guaranteed to be a defective piece of hardware in your system.

Do you plan to follow me around the forums like a lost puppy? If so, I got a bone for you. :)

To respond: Whatever the case may be. The fact that a 100+ page thread exists by various people, nVidia on their forums, does not respond. That's a problem and I can understand why people are mad regardless of the circumstances. I am sorry you disagree.

Something is wrong with my PC? Every part is brand new. It's a fresh OS install. I have used a different video port with *0* problems. Hell, the card in question works perfect using the VGA stock drivers. The problems only exist when the nVidia drivers are used.

You have awesome diagnosis abilities given you know nothing about the rig. ;)

You post shit that is just retarded, and you quote me doing it, so sure I'll reply.

The system is brand new. That implies that pieces of hardware never come defective when they're new right? GENIUS!

Did I say this? I am just trying to justify my opinion.

Try this again: No problems at all anywhere in the system. Video card works FINE with the VGA drivers but not useable at all with the nVidia. Should one have an inclination that it's software? nVidia not addressing. MULTIPLE threads/posts EVERWHERE regarding this. Nvidia not addressing. *I* think I have every right to not want the product. Again, sorry if you disagree.

Running with VGA drivers means no acceleration. The card is in no way used the same as when the drivers are installed and the OS knows the card's full abilities. That proves nothing. That's very poor logic.

But sure, the grass is always greener guy lol.

I turned off acceleration with the nVidia drivers too ...
