NVIDIA and Samsung have agreed to settle all pending intellectual property litigation between the two companies, NVIDIA announced today. The agreement will lead to the immediate dismissal of all pending IP litigation in U.S. district courts, the U.S. International Trade Commission and the U.S. Patent Office between the companies. The settlement includes the licensing of a small number of patents by each company to the other, but no broad cross-licensing of patents or other compensation. Further details of the agreement are not being disclosed.

Really wonder why Samsung let nvidia of the hook before giving the knockout blow.

Must be quite the out of court settlement.

Just curious, what is this "knockout blow" you keep referring to in multiple posts? It is not like Samsung would have been able to shut NV down.

The patent case Samsung won, which was on appeal, could have blocked the Shield Tablet in the US, IF the ITC decided and/or NV would have to pay royalties. It would not have affected the GPU or other product lines.

You might remember, this shit show was started by NV trying to open up lines of revenue by claiming Samsung and Qualcomm didn't pay for licensing of patents related to GPU technology. Remember NV laughably saying they invented the modern GPU. Companies do this crap all the time. Apple and Sammy had the same fight. Its all about gaining a little revenue.

They always end up the same way too; both companies come to a decision on licensing each others products. No one is ever, "knocked out," by this type of litigation.

This case probably ended up like NV said, it includes the licensing of a small number of patents by each company to the other, but it contains no broad cross-licensing of patents or other compensation. It could also have something to do with the rumor Samsung is or will be making chips for NV.

Am I wrong, or are Nvidia and AMD the only two GPU technology companies that haven't sued each other over GPU technology?

Well, the way the court case seemed to be going nvidia's case looked to be self destructing after a couple of their more ..hmm.. "Creative" patents were invalidated, and others were withdrawn, presumably for fear of losing them too. After all this, I used the term knockout in the sense that one side, in this case Samsung, not only successfully defended themselves, but took out most of nvidia's case against them even before the judgement. Had Samsung been motivated/annoyed enough they could've probably easily pushed for judgement, which more than likely would've been favorable, and then pushed their own suits against nvidia and their partners with a favorable judgement in their pocket already.

All that to say I'm sure Samsung isn't dropping everything for free when they seem to be holding all the cards.
