Nvidia 8800gt artifacts only with games

Hi there,

My geforce 8800gt has started artifacting only when when a modern 3d game is started. By that I mean that it can run simple graphics demos like OpenGL tests and such with no textures, and I can browse the Internet all day long perfectly.

When I start a nice game like GTA4, I can browse the menus normally and select a save or start a new game. Then it starts loading and it actually GETS to display the first frames for a second or two, so I actually get some 3d action going.But then, purple lines and a sort of green commas or something start appearing all over the screen, while at the same time everything slows down to a halt. The mouse itself still moves although is very laggy and it is actually a moving artifact. Occasionally a new frame is rendered, that is, a new frame full of artifacts and you can barely see the game behind them.

After 10 or 20 seconds, the mouse stops moving, and I can't get to the task manager to I have to switch off the computer manually.

I have tried it with several different installs and OSes with different drivers with the same result.

Any suggestions? Time to buy a new card?
 
Could very well be heat related. Take the card out, clean the fan/sink assembly. Pull the heatsink off, reapply thermal paste, see if you can drop the coretemp.
 
Sounds typical of heat issues or failing memory modules.

Follow catmug's advice, try putting a fan right on it. Try under clocking it using rivatuner or simlliar app.
 
Thermal problems just 2 seconds into the game? I can't hear the fans spinning up or anything, just the normal idle noise. This card, when gaming with a graphics-intensive game for a while, gets loud! But it's not the case.

OK, I'll try to underclock or clean it. I just disassembled it and I thought the contact zone over the gpu/heatsink would be "greasy" because of the thermal grease, but it was dry with only brown junk. As I don't know how it is supposed to be, is it normal?
 
yep my guess is the memory chips are getting too hot or their going bad. make sure the fan is working properly. make sure its at stock clocks. use afterburner or something else to monitor the fan speed and temps.
the brown junk is just dried up paste. most paste dries after time, and if it wasnt applied right could cause issues as well.
