Nvidia 6600 vs 6600GT

Can someone tell me how much better/why a 128 MB PCI express Nvidia 6600 GT is a better card/costs more than a 256 MB Nvidia 6600?

I assume the GT has better graphics capabilities, but I would also assume the 256 MB non GT version of the card would make up some of the differences.

Has anyone seen any data to see how close these perform, and I know that this card is a generation behind the 6800 series, but is it still a decent card for the money, about $200 for the 6600 GT, about 160 for the 256 MB non GT version.

The main difference between the cards lies with the core. The GT model comes with clocked at 500 mHz with DDR3 Memory (1000 mHz effective), whereas the non GT comes clocked at 300 mHz with DDR1 Memory (600mHz effective). The extra memory on the non GT is moot, in my opinion, as the memory bandwidth difference negates the bonus from doubling up on the RAM. No doubt, get the GT, even for a budget rig. The only reason to pick up a 6600 plain is for grandma's email box, and then only if you can find a really cheap PCI-Express motherboard to plop it on (IE, pointless). There's about a 25-40% difference in speed between a nonGT and a GT 6600, the 6600 comes only in PCI-Express, and 40$ is a drop in the bucket for the performance difference (Seriously a dollar a % in terms of performance? I'll take it!). As of writing, there is no way to OC a non GT to a GT, it is severely crippled with it's lackluster DDR1 memory.

It one of the oddities of the graphics card market that you can usually tell a fast mid price card by the fact that it 'only' has 128Mb RAM, while its cheaper, slower brethren have 256Mb.
 
Thanks Vongles, I suspected it had to do with upgrades in the memory and processor, but was actually having a hard time finding published specs. I could find all sorts of specs showing me the performance was better on the GT version, I just wanted to know why specifically. That about covers it...
