Nvidia 280 GX2?

So your multi million dollar investment gives you what... a couple fps advantage for a month or 2 over the competition? WOOHOO Big Deal. The only area where TWIMTBP has realy hurt ATI is in marketing, as for performance, they have always been able to deliver except for when they had poor performance cards relative to the competition, r600/r670. Sure in some TWIMTBP tiltes NV will have a bigger advantage, but why arent we seeing this across the board in all TWIMTBP titles?

To date, there isnt a single game I havnt been able to play with my ati cards and if a certain game plays a bit slower on it compared to the competition, because it was not optomized for it, then I can wait for a driver to fix that. Sure when it comes to past sli/crossfire card combos, you may have a point, but that may have changed. We will no more when a new TWIMTBP games out.

In any case my point is that TWIMTBP is an extremely expensive program. For ATI/AMD to wanna do something similar, they would need to see more benifits from it. Personally, Ide rather they invested thier profits in R&D and more driver staff personnel.

I'd rather see AMD do both. We see varying performance because of the coding takes advantage of one architect over the other. Working closely with game devs allows optimizing that would require months of waiting for drivers/patches to accomplish instead of just working out of the box.

I understand that Kowan, but when both NV and ATI have similar performing parts, is working closer with game devs really worth the money invested, when you see a struggling company like ATI/AMD come out and out perform the competiton in all categories without TWIMTBP. AMD/ATI need to choose where they invest thier money wisely, besides they all rdy work with developers when asked to. Its just that they dont pay them as much as NV does and thats certainly due to the fact that NV has alot more money to throw around.

I know money is tight for AMD. They don't need to spend as much as nVidia,(yes alot of it is PR) and you can bet nVidia currently is rethinking the amount they spend but the perceived benefit the average joe sees when walking into a B&M store has them grabbing a green box instead of red because of a flash screen they saw in a game.

I'm building a new setup next month with a HD4870x2 or 2 :p and want the perfect world where no matter what card I choose, the games just work and I can enjoy myself.
Working closer with game devs insure any problems are fixed quickly. We all know games are pushed out the door early and patched later, but the earlier AMD/nVidia is working with the devs, the faster the problems are solved.

The gpus are just to large, complexed and costly won't happen. More likely is a 260x2

I didn't miss your point, I was expanding on what those higher prices allow nVidia to do.
Changing the bus to 256 and using GDD5 would allow lower production costs, but wouldn't come anytime soon.

When ATi had a winner in the 9700 Pro, they didn't follow up working as closely as nVidia did/has/does with game devs. Their GITG didn't receive any where near the amount nVidia invests.

The HD4800 success, hopefully will have them rethinking about working as closely as nVidia does. It's both self-serving and a benefit to those using their products.

The 256 bit bus would also be MUCH easier to make into a GTX2 card.

I just don't see the value of speeding money for ads when your customer base is resenting the prices your charging. And to be honest I am LESS likely to buy a product with that logo as I know that without hacking your going to get in your face ever time you load the game, just that much longer and I got the message the first time.

Again the perception of the company = paying more green for green ads that you don't want along with milking the customers. And the perception is whats hurting them now. AMD introducing their current cards at the price points they did didn't help Nvidia ether

What?

I am referring to the start up screens on boishock. it makes you watch the disclaimer and the Nvidia plug every time you load. You can esc the 2K one but not the nvidia one. Over time it has really annoyed me. I payed for the game, not for advertising. its one of my pet peeves

Okay understood. I hit Esc to get through that on every game that allows it. I did the same for the few titles that had ATi's logo.
Many games can skip right to the opening menu by renaming the vid files loading at startup. I just hit Esc. though.

P.S. BioShock Tweak Guide
lists how to disable the opening shots.

Ok, now I feel stupid, missed that one. thanks. actually the esc works on the on the other intro movies but not the nvidia intro.

This is purely speculation, but I cannot believe that Nvidia was caught flat footed with the new ATI releases. The high prices for the 260/280 were set IMO because they were first to market and, also it let Nvidia bleed the early adopters. Is Nvidia lowering prices just to be competitive because they do not have anything coming to market in the short term, or are they making room in their pricing structure for a GPU that is more competitive with the 4870x2?

nVidia was caught off guard no doubt. Even though they were first to market with their new gen cards, they wouldn't have launched at the prices they did. Of course the pricing was set well before the launch as the chips had already been sold to the partners and nVidia couldn't destroy the margins for their partners at launch.

I think that nVidia would have rather had lower prices than to do the rebates they apparently are paying for now.
