NV5 silencer installed but...

After installing the NV5 on the 6800GT, the temperature was even higher than the stock cooling. Now I don't know what I did wrong. I use as thin as possible on the GPU. I used AS5 on that and for the RAM's stick with the thermal paste they included. A friend said the AS5 was too thick, I made sure this time that it is as thin as possible, I got even higher temps. Before was 80C, now 90C. I tighten the screws as tight as possible, bruising my hand in the process.
I took the idea from a friend using AS5 on the GPU, and I think there is nothing that is better than it. He took 5 attempts to card aat 66C. I just finished my seccond time.
Right now I'm rather pissed of with this thing. The GPU looks shiny enough for me not to place anything on it but the NV5 directly. help.
 
Same thing happened to a friend of mine, put the nv5 on his 6800gt and temps went up considerably. I took a look at and it appeared that the as5 was too thin, was not even contacting the nv5 heatsink. I wan't too impressed with the build quality of that particular nv5 either. I took it apart and put a nice gob right on the middle of the gpu, put the nv5 back on and then it ran cooler than stock. I know everyone says to use a thin as layer as possible, but in some cases you need to pile it on thicker to make good contact with the heatsink, specially in the case of some poor fitting nv5's. Try a nice size gob in the middle of the gpu (not too much though), if that don't work for you, you can always remove it and start again.
 
Look, this is really simple. :)

Take the Silencer off. Look at the AS5. Odds are you just aren't getting 100% contact between the heat sink and the chips. Use enough AS5 to get 100% contact between the GPU and RAM chips & the heatsink. Gently squish them together to make sure you are getting good contact. Hold it up sideways to a bright light and inspect it.

And make sure it is on tight enough (without cracking anything).

Bottom line, this isn't a CPU installation, so you don't follow the AS5 instructions for a CPU installation. To ensure good contact, you need to use more AS5 than you would on a CPU.
 
yup, the manufacturing quality of NV5s is really crap. I had to sand the memory blocks so that the core could make proper contact (too a few hours too with 150grit!)

BUT: I looked at 6800 ultra and it appears to have higher core than 6800gt... Maybe they made NV5 to the measurements of the ultra when gt's are a little different (lower-sitting core). If this is true, NV5 is unusable for either one: on GTs, u need to sand the base down to make contact, on ultras, u need to mode the backplate to allow the hot air to escape. SOme design on part Arctic Cooling :D
 
I will try that later. I am not impressed yet now. The instructions that came with the NV5 said as thin as possible on the gpu, thick as possible on the RAM's.
Since I open/close heatsink, the RAM's thermal paste seems to look like the water colors of children drawings. Must I reapply all thermal paste as well?
 
I installed an NV5 on my 6800gt and I didn't notice any temp reductions at first but the fan was much quieter than the stock fan. After a few days of running I noticed my temps start to drop. I remember the Artic website mentioning something about a break-in period, and I guess it's true.
 
This is weird. I installed my NV5 silencer on my BFGtech GeForce 6800 the very first time and saw a 15 degrees C drop in temp on idle. I run at 50degrees C idle. *shrug*
 
i have a theory... the 90-100 C stock ones.. im betting they got increased voltage over the 60-70C stock ones... someone measure and find out
 
Well after reapplying the AS5, I have to say this. Don't trust the instructions when it says really thin layer on the GPU. I had to make several layers for it to touch the heatsink. ANd placed some on the heatsink. Now I get 56-62 idle temp.

Which only proves my point - NV5 rarely make proper contact with the core due to either poor engineering or manufacturing. Idea is pretty (worked extremely well on original silencer), but not on 6800s

Let me ask you this: would you mind if there was a gap between the heatsink and your CPU, that you had to fill in with extra, and I mean more than suggested by Arctic Silver, thermal compound? Now recall that 6800 gpus get hotter than even prescotts! So, what u gonna do?
 
In this case I'll ditch the AS5 and heatsink and go for watercooling. The design of NV5 did not come to contact because they "anticipated" the rams were thicker than usual. At least mine did not come with any manufacturing error, or maybe the manufacturing was faulty to begin with.
