NV5 Rev 2 Thermal Pads

I am thinking about getting the NV5 Rev 2 but have a concern about the thermal pad being used on the memory. Has anyone tried AS5 on the memory instead? Does it still make good contact with AS5?
 
The reason they switched to using thermal pads in the first place is because they can't turn out a consistent product within the tolerances needed to make good contact with the core and the ram. So, they bent over and slapped cheapo thermal pads on there instead, and since they are compliant, the poor core contact issues which plagued the first generations is somewhat mitigated. Using Arctic Silver on memory is ill advised, as it can easily short the very close proximity wires on the sides or bottom of every BGA ram package.

Get an IceStorm if you want good cooling for your 6800. ;)

but also true... the IceStorm appears to be the best performing air cooling option for the 6800/6600 series cards... thermal pads really suck IMO... they work ok, but they are far from a "high performance" thermal medium for good xfer to the sinks... AS5 is dangerous for the memory, for the reasons Cons9k pointed out, but you can use polysynthetic/ceramic compound for your memory chips as a safe AS5 alternative...BUT, with the NV Silencer, you'll need to pile up a decent sized "smear" of that compount to meet the sink bottom with the memory tops... if you are in this for raw cooling, I would recommend going with seperate cooling for the memory (ram sinks work well) and the GPU (Ice Storm or maybe the Vantec iCEBERQ5 if you are on a tight budget)... just a few things to think about. :)
