NV48 is NV45 with 512MB RAM

Same clocks, same name, same as it ever was

By Fuad Abazovic: Monday 28 February 2005, 11:51

DESPITE EARLIER claims, Nvidia will introduce one more card codenamed NV48. It won't be an exciting part of the phenomenon hardware thang, as Nvidia will use NV45 chips and will plug 512 MB of memory at the card. Actually, this time NV48 is the codename for graphic card more than it is for the chip. Clocks will remain the same it will be the same card clocked to 400 MHz core and 1100 MHz memory as it is with NV45, Geforce 6800 Ultra card.
If you remember, and bear with us, dear reader, NV45 is NV40 with BR2 bridge so NV48 is bridge of the bridged card, it sure isn't a native. We could say or describe it as an update of an updated marchitecture. But we won't do that. Oops! We just did.

NV48 will keep the Geforce 6800 series name and if we talk about the NV48 Ultra we will end up with 6800 Ultra 512 MB card. Gainward already announced such a card and it hopes to demo it at the soon to be upcoming CeBIT, or hangover as my dad says.

We are easily sailing towards the new memory graphic wars. Do we actually need 512MB of memory? You don’t want me to answer that question. So all I will say is, give the piece a chance. µ

IS THIS BULLSHIT????

thanks

f

Why would it be BS? We've seen ATI demo their 512MB X850XT PE, we've seen press releases of the 512 MB Gainward 6800U, this is just more of the same?

I would think right now the uses for 512MB would be few and far between, but that's the way it always is after they bumb the onboard memory, at least for a while.

Yep, it's possible. Check out the NVidia forum for a link to a user's experience with an ES of this card. Didn't offer very much in terms of extra performance, though...

hopefully this "same" core would have that whole 6800 video processing design flaw all straightened out.

yes but if ATI is releasing their r520 pretty soon, shouldn'y nvidia have something more to combat it than just an extra 256mb?

G70

The NV48 is a 110nm "optimized" die shrink of the NV40. That's much like how ATI recently refreshed the R420 with the 110nm x800 XL and R480 (X850 XT) chips. What made you think that the NV48 was the only chip nvidia was making? :p

when will g70 be available in shops (not just announced)

probably around the time when R520 cards are.

I'm wondering if 512 MB of memory will help address some of the potential issues with the new displays on the market. Namely, Dell's new 2405fpw. This new display is 24" and in a wide aspect ratio. The native display is 1920x1200.

Will 512 MB of memory help with these higher rez displays over a simillar clocked 256 MB version?

I've been wanting to get a new display, but I've been holding off due to the relative performance of current gen cards to render good frames while playing games at 1920x1200.

Any idea how memor will address this?

Thanks,

Im thinking this would only be usefull in unreal3, but the card wouldnt be powerful enough by then for it to matter to anyone seriously looking to buy it. I guess their tatics is to resell the same card to the uneducated masses while buying time for the next cores.

Agreed, Its like that simpsons episode about the malibu stacey, When Lisa creates Lisa Lionheart doll, the Malibu stacey company had to refresh an old product, ALl they did was put a new hat on the old malibu stacey doll and everybody went for it.. LOL

I know you guys are reading this and going Wtf~ :p :D

What's funny about the Unreal3 comment is that the NV40 was considered the minimum to play UE3 games with full quality.

So why would a faster 110nm update of that minimum GPU not be able to play Unreal 3? Because ATI's complete line chips so far won't in full qualty since it lacks certain features. I love the logic of some posters here. No offense, but both ATI and NVIDIA have released tweaks to their cores and dribbled them out as updates. The last 2 comments (not you ScHpAnKy, the 2 before) pretend like only NVIDIA is doing that. And both ATI and NVIDIA are going to have some kind of major update in the next few months.

I was just saying how it seems as though all they added was 256mb more memory and it was hyped like the Simpson's, I wasnt saying anything about the Unreal3

The R520 is supposed to support SM3.0.... NVIDIA already supports this along with HDL. Not to mention driver updates are rumored to support OpenGL 2.0

So the R520 is playing catch up (at least feature wise) to the NV40.

HDL? Anyways the good thing about Nvidia implementing SM3.0 this round is now that it has experience with it, it will be more refined than ATI's.

I think he meant HDR Lighting. But that's kind of inaccurate because it is just the OpenEXR method that is unique to nvidia, not HDR in general.

You know, I'm going to go out on a limb and say, 512mb of ram WILL make a difference. Saying the explosive power of the 6800 Ultra and the 850XT PE (if it exists?), I'm sure it can utilize the extra ram effectively. (SLI would probably take it into the realms of having TOO MUCH power, not sure if you can run Doom3 in 2054x19-something with 6xAA 16xAF without getting less then 100fps)

The price on this cards could, and WILL be ridiculus. If I had to guess, which this forum is all about (guessing in generalities), then I'd say it'd be at least 700 bucks at most online vendors, and forget finding them in Best Buy and Circuit City. Something tells me these will be on the order of extremely rare tie overs to keep buyers interested until the next cores show up.

Anyone else interested what the supposed totally uncompressed textures in Doom3 look like? (Remember ID mentioned that Doom 3 would be compressed unless your video card has 512mb of ram.) I'm not the biggest fan of the game, but I wonder if the graphical differences are even noticable?

In doom 3 you can have uncompressed, it is only reccomended for 512mb
However I would think that 512mb would help in far cry with its large environments...?

Ok cool, Nvidia is going to release a 512MB video card for enthusiasts, excellent.

Why the F*ck is ati being talked about in an nvidia thread?

Some people have no lifes and are too much of panzies in real life so they hafta start some shit on the web.

Grow up

People mention the ATi cards, because they are doing the EXACT same thing right now. Trying to make a relation to it.

I don't think anyone has said that either one is better than another, or that they are copying each other, so why the negative attittude?

Musty, I appologize if my post made you a bit "put off". That was not my intention.

I was just following this thread as I was interested in the latest technologies from these two companies and how I could possibly benefit from it.

I Never meant to start a flame war nor offend you in any way.

hhahhahaaaa calm down sister. nvidiots come into ATI related topics and spout of bs about sli and sm3 all day so id say turnabout is fair play. get used to it. :D

two wrongs don't make a right and all that.....

But, back on point, 2 questions
(1) Will this merely be a one upmanship vapor ware/riciicoulously small quantities and expensive product e.g. 6800 ultra extreme?
(2) when will g70 and r520 be available in stores.....i.e. i am on the verge of buying dual 6800gt, to last me for next 2-3 years, however should i wait for g70?

I would venture to say yes to the first question as the whole thing is eerily reminiscent of the PE vx UE battle last year (although you can find PEs better than UEs).

As for the second question, I would say paper launch by mid year, limited quantities by Christmas and full retail availability by the time Longhorn ships :).

Where exactly did I say it wouldnt play unreal3? What im saying is the only place where the 512mb *may* be necessary is in unreal3 and by the time unreal3 is out this card wont be worth the trouble as we will already have nextgen hardware.

specifically with regards to nvidia's nv48, what stops them from combining the best of the 6600gt/6800ultra?

e.g.
6600gt = 128 MB, 500mhz core, 1000 mhz GDDR3, 8 pipes, 128-bit, purevideo capable
6800U = 256 MB, 400mhz core, 1100mhz GDDR3, 16 pipes, 256-bit, no purevideo
------------------------------------------------
"6900 U"= 512 MB, 500 mhz core, 1100 mhz GDDR3, 16 pipes, 256-bit, purevideo

What's the limiting factor in the architectures? wouldn't this provide a significant enough performance boost for a refresh?

not really.. did you see gigabyte's dual core 6600gt both 500mhz ? two of those can;t touch on 6800gt..and gigabyte used 256mb of ddr3 ram on the dual gpu board too and it won't even beat one 6800gt hehe..the arcitecture on the 6600gt's gpu just isn't as good as a lower clocked nv40 gpu :)

well the fact is there is a limiting factor. perhaps its their fab process, maybe they need to move to .90 to get more speed gains

This is the same thing as when 256MB cards first came out. There was only a 1-2 FPS difference. Now 256MB cards have their place, as the 512MB will in a few months.

thats not the same thing...at all. Besides the NV43 has its upsides, particularly the purevideo capabilities, which would be nice to see on a 6800 gt/ultra type card

or nvidia is just effin lazy. :D

sheesh nvidia gots to have something better then that. i mean come on xbox2 is incorperating the R500 which stated by MS is 3x faster then the X850XTPE. devolpers are useing this as a thumb rule for making games for xbox2. im sure mikeandbandit has info on this as he always does along with a low level activision programmer in the xbox scene forums

i kid you not ATI is redoing there core this aint no petty refresh for them

that gigabyte wasnt the same thing, that one was like 2x6600GT's in SLI, and performed like them.

as for the 6800U at 500mhz core/1100mem, i think they should just go ahead with the 110mm die shrink and boosting the core to those speeds, seeing the good yields and the speed of the 6600Gt's core.

ATI has been refreshing for 3 years however, while nvidia more recently released a completely new architecture. You act like the 512mb 6800ultra is nvidia's answer to the r520, which plainly it is not.

As can be seen here, the 6800 ultra 512mb is exactly the same as the quadro fx 4400 in shape and size and heat sinks, e.g. mosfet sink
