Thank you so much!!!

Now that the date is out in the open I'm getting very jittery and even more ready to dump my 9800XT.....especially after seeing those insane pics over at Beyond3d. I was originally trying to approach this practically but I think I might have to end up jumping on the nv40 AS SOON AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE.

If that means NOT waiting for the r420 then so be it. I'm such a huge sucker for technology that having pics AND a date set is enough to "seal the deal" in my head.

If the r420 does end up being the better of the two I'll just sell the nv40 and switch over. However, one thing is for sure.....you'll be able to see me on the front lines with this beauty in hand.....grinnin' away. :D

What do you guys think???

calm down.

and i don't intend to upgrade my newly flashed 9800xt ANYTIME SOON!

With statements like that, I'm rather surprised you don't have the latest P4EE or AMD-FX53.

Shit man, you know its gonna cost like $500. I have no idea why you are upgrading after spending $400 for that XT...

Plus, no one knows how the hell it'll do.

Yeah, I know.....but you gotta draw the line somewhere. I'll have my Prometia in place this summer for my P4 (up coming 3.2C) to keep it at 4GHz though which will easily be enough to keep me happy.

Considering we've all been waiting for this for a LONG time, you can't really blame me for getting so excited. :D

I know, but by the time I CAN buy it, we'll already know. I'm just saying that if Nvidia holds up to their earlier claims (who knows, no nv30 flames please) it'll kick ass.

And yeah, you do know that I'm talking in Canadian funds right??? The BBA 9800XT is still sitting at about $630, which is where I'm getting that $700 from. I'm completely willing to shell out the cash, it'll just come down to the performance.

It won't matter if it's only say.....10% faster, I'll still buy it. Shit, I went from an overclocked 9800Pro to my XT so can you blame me??? ;)

I would at least wait for reviews to make up my final decision. But hey if you want to go by unconfirmed posts on messageboards, that's your decision.

That's what I'm saying, I AM going to wait.....I'm just really excited.

Reading this for the first time just made my skin tingle. :D

Of course I'm going to see how it performs first, that's a given.

But please, let's not make this all about me and instead spend time celebrating the (hopefully) confirmed launch date. :D :D :D

Btw, before you purchase, at least compare this to the r420.

Heh, or I could see how it performs, pick it up, and sell it if the r420 blows it away. ;)

Either way I'm gonna be a happy camper.

I'd probly start watching for ATI to make some kind of announcement.....they won't take this lying down.

they will both probably launch at about the same time, so their won't be much time where we only know the capabilities of one or the other. wouldn't it be neat if both lifted the NDA's on the same day so that most of the reviews would be those two cards going head to head. (drool)

OMG would that kick ass. :D

If ATI makes some kind of announcement in the next few week and they don't end up being that far apart then I'll just wait..........but don't expect me to "hang tough" for an extra month or two just to see the other side of the fence.

If ATI takes too long to deliver and Nvidia comes through on their performance claims then guess where my money's going. ;) :D

Before you buy the nv40 card make sure you have enough power. This thing have two molex connectors.

First hands-on look at NV40

CeBIT 2004 Shocking power requirements

By Paul Dutton: 19.3.2004, 16:33

THE INQUIRER has managed to get hold of one NV40 sample.
We agreed not to photograph what we saw, but can confirm the following.

When removing the heatsink, we noted that the NV40 GPU itself was, in comparison to what we have seen before, quite large.

However whilst our earlier information indicated that it comprised of 205 -210 million transistors, our sources currently say that what we were holding was a 175 million transistor part.

With the heatsink removed we could see that a small formed surrounding was employed to assist leveling of the heatsink.

Unlike the ill fated GeForce FX 5800 Ultra (NV30) where a heatsink on the back of the PCB could also interface with a small section of the PCB directly behind the GPU as well as the memory modules, additional circuitry in this area on the NV40 prohibits this.

Whilst a heatsink still seems necessary to assist thermal control of the new lower voltage memory modules, the heatsink on the front of the GPU will have to do all the work.

Eight 32MB video memory modules are installed – four on each side of the PCB and as we first reported from Computex in Taiwan – these are of the new GDDR3 type.

However these were not from Micron, which at that time seemed to be both ATi and Nvidia’s GDDR3 development partner. Instead, Samsung seems to be the preferred supplier of the 256MB we saw installed.

The primary shocker was that the board requires two large 4-pin power connectors as opposed to the single power connector on current high-end products.

Perhaps a lot of end-users who have been thinking that they might wait and upgrade to NV40 when it becomes available, should start saving their sheckles to upgrade to a new power supply unit as well.

One final thing, contrary to previous speculation, we think that ‘NV40’ that will come to market may be what was originally planned, as NV45 is, we’re told, the PCI Express part.

Whether that has an AGP to PCI Express bridge chip remains to be seen.

I am willing to bet that there won't be two on the shipping hardware. a lot of prototype hardware is more powerhungry than its retail bretheren. (but if prescott was once more power hungry...*shudders*)

This is a valid point.....but nobody really knows until the hardware hits the test bench. I've got my Enermax 465 right now that serving me just fine but I might be switching to a 550W Antec Truepower down the road for the extra bit of re-asurance.

end of the month maybe, that's usually when the NDAs expire.

Let's all hope so.....any great deal longer then that and I'm gonna start to go crazy. ;)

I'm also looking to upgrade my ti4400 right now and am growing more impatient by the day:(

But I have two questions...anybody that has any input or opinions please post...

1. When will we actually see nv40 on shelves and available to buy?

2. Will they have only one flagship card or possibly a "non-ultra" version that will be less.

If there is a ~300 dollar "non-ultra" card...I'd get that. However if there will only be the one model flagship ~500 dollar card...I can't afford that much and I'd just snag a 9800pro. I'm having a hard time not getting the 9800pro right now...;)

cornelious0_0, i defintely admire your dedication to performance, ill probally be right there with you on the nv40 or r420. i really need to get rid of this ti4200

1. When will we actually see nv40 on shelves and available to buy?

I dont' know.....and neither does anyone else. For all we know they could run into some problem between the launch and release that might push it back even if they WERE to give an early release date now. If things go the same as they did at the nv30 "unveiling" I doubt we'll get any extra release info then either.....but there'll most likely be some very interesting performance comparisons between the nv40 and 5900/5950. I still can't wait. :D

2. Will they have only one flagship card or possibly a "non-ultra" version that will be less.

While I have no idea EXACTLY what's going on right now, I can basically gaurantee you that there'll be more then one version. Think back, when was the last time Nvidia only released ONE card.....pre-GeForce2. ;)

While a lot of us (myself included) WILL be shelling out $500+ for the flagship beast, not everyone can/will want to. Use common sense, If nvidia MADE you pay $500 for their newest technology they wouldn't really get anywhere would they? ;) :D

Don't expect to be able to buy it until May. What I'm curious as fuck about is the R423. WTF is going on with ATI? They taped out their next gen before Nvidia did yet we still have NOTHING on their card. Either it's godly or it's total crap, either way I'd like SOMETHING please.

Yawn.......

I'll wait and see until summer, until then, I could care less. Nvidia has burned me enough times already....

is that all the 6500 ultra mega 2 will support... 1280x1024

I was hoping at least 5120x4096 with 64x AA and 32x AF

im pretty sure that image is fake. ;)

I sure hope that this thread doesn't fill up with stuff like this.....be reasonable guys.

On a side note.....I won't really be needing either card until about August so I think it might be best to wait it out and compare the nv40 to the r420 after they're both released. If ATI hopes to stay competitive againsts what the nv40 is turning into things will sure get interesting. It looks like it'll take quite a fair bit to outdo the California giant this time around from what we've heard thus far. But again, it's far to early to make any final calls, I'm just daydreaming. :D

im sure you'll see ATIs release days after nvidia, you must remember .. they were the first to announce A12, they do have production cores, and they are probably massively manufacturing them like nVidia. It would be in ATI's best interest to release R420 at the same time as nvidia's.

after reading the original post all i could think to myself was "this guy must lose alot of money while trying to stay on the cutting edge of everything"

I'll take that 9800XT off your hands, even if I do have to pay for it! Better gimme a nice deal cause I read almost every post you make!

You could say that, 'cept I'm 18, live at home, and have next to nothing for expenses. ;)

Wow, I have a fan.

Im 15, but if i had that kind of money to spend... id put it in an account and not tell anybody about it. Let my parents/me/grants put me through college and either pay off college debts or when your out you might have 10 grand in that account for a new system, or 10K might make a nice down payment on a car.

Maybe some people have better money managment than others

My grandmother just died and im getting anywhere between 1K-5K cash that is mine. I had lots of things run through my mind:
New system once all new things roll in(BTX/OLED/DDR2/R420/PCI-E)
new case
new moniter
new laptop

but then i though about it and said it wasnt worth it because i have a stellar system than from what i came from(Compaq/1ghz amd athlon/512 ram/gf2mx400) i could put this in an account and leave it be... put little money in each month and maybe by the time im outta college ill have 10K or so just to roll around.

but thats just me

pretty impressive money management from a 15 yr old if you ask me. (btw, im 16 :D)

You are 18 and still live at home? Maybe instead of blowing $500 on a video card you should save that money, move out and quit mooching off your parents.

Why on earth would I do a thing like that???

I admit that I have very poor money management "skills" but for now that's just the way things are. I have no outside hobbies and no girl so my money ends up flowing straight into my computer which I confess.....is getting a little old.

I still take extreme pride in having an awsome setup but I think I'm starting to see through it.

Come on guys.....enough about me, this thread is for the card.

When ATI puts out is hardware so Nvidia can see how bad they have to fubar IQ and driver code to keep up. :p

j/k......maybe.
