Greetings all,
First time poster here!
I've been having some difficulty with my NV Silencer 5, and I'm hoping someone can help out a bit. In short, here is the story:
eVGA 6800GT/stock cooling = 58C/74C (idle/load)
eVGA 6800GT/NV Silencer 5 = 63C/83C (idle/load)
The thing seemed to install without much of a problem. The stock fan plug was kind of a pain to remove though...hehe.
I used AS5 as the thermal paste for both core and memory. I followed the directions (thin layer on core/thicker layer on memory). I "wiggled" as best I could after mounting on the pins, in order to minimize air bubbles forming.
Fan is working (rotates clockwise, which seems odd...negligible air coming out the back vent...yet very turbulent around the fan end. Seems like fan blade should "scoop" air towards the HS, but who knows. It seems more like "sweeping" than "scooping". I've never installed one of these, and I assume the fan is moving in the right direction! I read on some forum that some models were rotating the wrong way...but I have no proof of that. I tried witching the pin connections, but the fan wouldn't work at all doing it that way.
So I figure it could be 4 things:
1. Too much AS5
2. Too little AS5
3. NV Silencer 5 not screwed down tight enough (I do have quite visible rubber stopper compression...it is on there pretty tight I think. I'm not comfortable going any further...It is tight. I alternated the screwdown, (like in changing a tire)
4. I should have used the supplied thermal paste instead of AS5 (I hope this wouldn't cause a problem)
I know AS5 will "cure" after a few weeks/thermal cycles...but it won't lower the temps 15-20C I should think!
However, I will say that it does run nice and quiet
Anyone had this experience, or could help point me in the right direction? I'm more than a little frustrated because this seems to be pretty straightforward.
(quick edit: Does anyone know offhand if the fan for the NV Silencer 5 is supposed to run clockwise or counterclockwise? It just bothers me that I can't really feel any exhaust out the back...I held a lighter at the port, and it doesnt' even flicker )
