Hi, my cousin just gave me his NV Silencer 5, and I don't know what revision it is.
I'm putting it on my BFG 6800GT AGP. It was idling 63, loading at 95+. Celsius!
Well, I was just wondering, the revision I have is the one with the thermal pads, not
the soldered on copper blocks for the memory. I was wondering, do I apply AS5 onto
the ram as well as the thermal pads?

i dont believe the revision should matter, the only diff between rev 2/3 is taht rev 3 has the backplate for the memory on the 7800gtx
also, i ahve rev 3 and i have copper blocks, so ur prolly rev 2 ;)
as for the AS5, if there isnt any on the core for the cooler, apply it; if there arent any thermal pads for the ram, apply it
hope it helps

Yes, they all are.
It's just that one of the revisions has thermal pads for the RAM,
while the other has copper blocks for the ram.

Okay, I don't know what temperature differences I should have been
expecting but I went from 63idle/95load to 58idle/82load.

That still seems a little hot to me, but maybe it's just a really hot gpu?

I put a dot of AS5 on the GPU core, and just installed the silencer.
Correct? Wrong?

is there any airflow at all in the case? it's possible that the temperature sensor is just crappy!

i always thought you spread the as5 for a gpu and let it settle in for the cpu...

I just installed an ATI silencer 5r3 on my 6800gs. The card idled above 65 after the install. Turns out, the heatsink was not making good contact with the core. You may want to look under the heatsink with a flashlight, and see if you can see a space between the core and the heatsink.

the whole... spreading AS5 thin didn't work.
I think the dot thing worked better, but when i took off the
silencer, AS5 hadn't covered the entire core. I know this doesnt
matter as much when applying AS5 on an IHS, since the core is
only in the middle, but i think gpu cores are... the whole thing?
So this time around, i put more AS5 than i did before, and my
temps are alright i think. currently running rthdribl.

I went from...
(IDLE/LOAD)
Stock - (63/95+)
Silencer using dot of AS5 - (58/82)
Silencer spreading AS5 thin - (65/?)
Silencer using bigger dot of AS5 - (53/74)
