NV finally allows Sli on amd chipsets

More of a sign that nobody on an AMD platform wanted to use their crummy chipsets but they still want to be able to sell SLI to AMD users. This is still good news for everyone, no more hacking for SLI :)
 
Yeah but if they opened it up one day there might be 10 or even 12 games that support it.

But people haven't been buying it for almost 2 years now. They completely ignored the 790FX and 890FX users through the end of the Phenom and the whole life of the Phenom II because the few users that XF/SLI on the Phenom II platform would probably be more inclined to buy ATI anyways (because they choose AMD for a non- gaming performance reason). So that would imply that they see the potential for increased Dual card usage with BD, if that was the case then one would expect that the CPU has benched fairly well in modern games.
 
It isn't in AMDs long term interest to support PhysX. I think Nvidia even offered to allow them to use it at no cost before but it was declined. The reason is AMD has no long term guarantee Nvidia will change its stance on PhysX, and if they do support it and it becomes more likely to be the industry standard they would have serious issues at that time.
 
GPU PhysX is still rooted in CUDA. It ain't appearing on AMD GPUs any time soon.

nvidia lost Apple and that has to hurt. Scraping up new business is just good business.

AMD wouldn't use physx on their hardware anyway. They will never want to be bound by licensing terms of a direct market rival on their own hardware.

nvidia was making their own AM3 chipsets that supported SLI so saying they were ignoring the Phenom 2 platform is kind of asinine.

Sorry didn't realize that that the 980a (with no other 900 series options) was a AM3 launch day product. So basically as they shut the door on development they tossed out one quick overly expensive chip set during its death sprawl. Don't know if not noticing a single version of a single series released 2 years ago just as AM3 was launched was asinine.

I don't think the last chipsets were terrible (6 and 7 series were pretty terrible), but they were definitely inferior. Unless someone wanted to run SLI without hacks, there was/is absolutely no reason to buy nvidia chipset AM3 boards over AMD chipset AM3 boards.
 
Hope this is not some bullshit April Fools joke, would be great if this is true. NVIDIA should have done this a long time ago, if they want more market share for SLI this is the way to do it.
 
Hope its true because if bulldozer is faster then my I7 920 i wouldnt have to worry about carrying my sli 480s over. Its been awhile since I had an AMD setup or contemplated building one.
 
So here is the million dollar question.

Will we be able to take the 990fx key and hack it into all existing AMD boards so all new Nvidia drivers reconize our boards as a 990fx and allow sli?
 
I love amd processors, They are all i will buy. I was given an I7 for christmas, sold it on ebay and bought a sixcore athlon II.. but, i really dont much care for ATi.. Im not a "FAN" of any company.. only the quality of their products.. Intel is fine and great as a cpu maker.. but amd cpu's run damn near as fast, Overclock WAY better, are more stable and run far cooler. but just because I perfer AMD cpu's doesnt mean im going to grab up one of their graphics cards. Nvidia has kept me happy with performance , stability, and the fact they pretty much set the standard in things.
 
That is pretty cool, I don't really see much need for SLI or crossfire at 1080p yet. I also won't upgrade my CPU this generation seeing as I have a decent enough processor running at 4.0GHz. Heck, I still haven't bought a 30" 1080p monitor yet.

Here we have another forum member that thinks like me. :)

If Bulldozer was going to be another Phenom esque launch nvidia wouldn't have bothered. I believe this is a sign of things to come and we may have the next AMD 64 launch of this decade. AMD may very well be on top for the next 3 years. We'll just have to wait and see.

wrong, nvidia was never making AM3 chipsets.. Nvidia officially dumped AMD platform support a couple months before AM3 was released. the difference is that with the AMD platform, the chipset its self has no effect on whether it supports a socket or not. the southbridge is the only external chip other then the socket on the board that dictates what socket/processor/ram is supported. all nvidia based AMD boards were solely produced by the motherboard manufactures with zero support from Nvidia. the 980a was originally a rebranded 780a chipset sold under the AM2+ socket. other then the pin count and DDR3 support, AM3 is not much different from AM2+. they both have the same Hyper transport speed/config(which is the only direct link between the chipset and cpu).
