Nubie needs help with system build!!

I'm not new at building systems but not as advanced as some of you folks. Here's what I have:

ECS K7S5A V.1
AMD T-Bird 750
GeForce DDR 32mg (1st ver)
256 PC133
1.3 GB HDD with bad sectors(20.5 went south)
no CDR or floppy (both went south)
case is shot

Basically what I have is garbage. I can put together a decent P4 2.8 for $500. Or I can salvage the MB and slap a XP 2400+ or 2600+ on it after bios flash and have a working PC sooner than building a P4. And do a new board later with some cpu upgrade room. New HD, CDRW, floppy, case and vid card are new parts in the build. By buddy's trying to get me to buy one of these:

I've always built my own boxes. Want it to stay that way. As I said before, I'm not as advanced as alot of you folks. Should I hold off for a P4 or can a better system be built than this Compaq above? Or trash the whole box above/start over or salvage the MB? I use my box for internet, Office 2000 stuff, a few games and will be using for video/photos later on. Most of the components for this potential P4 box are refurbs from NewEgg. Your thoughts please! :)

i think i would start from scratch if i were you. you said that pc is an old compaq? if so, i would DEFINATELY build a new one. i am biased to intel, cause i love my 3.4 p4, i havent had an amd system in years. one thought tho, is getting a 2.4 instead of the 2.8, dunno what the price difference is, but that 2.4 should OC to 3.0 pretty easy. the 2.8 i used to have was a very good processor tho.

My friend was trying to me to go with a $299 Compaq Celeron 2.8 with built in video etc. But I don't want that. This $500 budget is based off a $50 mb + P4 from newegg. Really think I'll be able to OC on a low cost board.

Without breaking my budget, what are some good oc capabable boards...amd and p4 for $150 (cpu and board).

You probably won't be able to salvage your case and PSU. The newer systems require stronger PSUs. I would hang on to what you have until you can save up to build a nice new system. Don't reuse any of that old stuff.
 
here's what i came up with for your budget, the gfx is pretty shitty, but it will do until you can afford ~$200 for a better card, it's under your $500 so maybe u could get a new keyboard and mouse with the extra. also u prob would want to shop around newegg for a different case, i just put it in there to show the approx. price, those kinda things are all personal preference. and the 2.8 vs. the 2.4 wasnt a huge diff in price, so might as well go with the 2.8 and not worry about the oc'ing. hope this helps....

You could get a 6600GT AGP for about $200. It would bust your budget by about $50. If you are building a gaming rig, it would be worth it.

like i said in my post, i only chose that case and psu for price reference, so why dont u keep your USELESS comments to yourself

your just full of help arent you? the guy is a on a $500 budget u can't expect to have the best of everything. i just noticed i forgot ram, so that will put him over that budget.

Nice try here mate but that was the 2nd version :p I got the first version Which is a Geforce SDR 32MB. A few weeks after i bought it began the DDR version which is a little faster :)
