1.When installing the Processor will i need to apply thermal paste or can u simply put the heat sink ontop of the processor.

2.if i need it, what is a good brand of thermal paste and where can i get it? (does fry's sell it? and what about micro center)

3.also should i use gloves, or just be careful with my fingers?

4.With Bios setup, do i just need to set how much memory is installed or is there anything else i should do? (i.e. are default settings good?)

5.is Sata AHCI better than IDE?

6.will i need to set up the boot priority, or will the default settings on the BIOS be good?

7.Also the MOBO has a quick boot option. how effective is that for booting faster?

8.also will i have to set the pcie x16 slot as the main video slot or will that be auto detected?

the mobo is a UD2 Gigabyte

wow no responses? i literaly need help. so i know all of you have answers to my questions no matter how stupid they may be. you were all once in my position.

Dude, calm down. It's the holidays. We're all out and about.

1) If the HSF you're using already has thermal paste pre-applied, then no need to apply thermal paste
2) Arctic Cooling MX2 and MX3 is a good thermal paste
3) Go ahead and use gloves
4) Default settings should be good-ish
5) SATA is generally better than IDE
6) Set the boot priority
7) Roughly 5 seconds
8) Auto detected

Make sure that you read the MechBGon FAQ listed in the General Hardware FAQ. That's an excellent primer for new builders.

or in and about ;)

to OP questions:
all of what danny said but also:

gloves for what?
I wouldn't suggest leather gloves or something like that for putting in a CPU, just kills dexterity, no need, and latex gloves will likely just get torn up

as far as thermal pastes go, I like Arctic Silver Ceramique, its non-conductive (I've never had an issue with AS5 but I don't like the extra neatness required for something thats conductive), provides some decent sticking power, and is fairly effective, just be careful pulling heatsinks off of things with thermal paste on it, many a noobie has killed their processor/memory/graphics card/etc this way

default settings usually work, although if you get it all together and it boots up and has dramatic problems, try resetting the BIOS, also (refer to user manual) make sure the CMOS jumper isn't in the clear position (some boards ship this way)

everything else, auto/default is generally fine until you run into issues, then go ahead and start changing things, as far as boot priority you'll probably want to change it twice:

first to get your installation media for an OS picked "first"
second to get your booting HD picked "first" to speed up the boot process
