NTLDR Not Detected error

Hey all, major problem here.

I've have google searched my error and have tried a few of the listed fixes I ran upon to no success.

Here is my dilema:

Downloaded a firmware file that was supposed to take my Liteon 1633s back to factory. Had upgraded the firmware, but the discs after the upgrade are having compatibility issues around the house if various drives.

I got the file from a site from a google search as Liteon says that once the firmware was flashed to the newest version, it cannot be reversed. I have reversed firmware on an older Pioneer 103 dvd-r drive with no problem, so I figured I could actually do it.

Anyway, dl'd the file, ran it and then the computer appeared to hangup after it reached 100%. So, and here is the mistake I obviously made, I rebooted the system.

During the bios check, it cannot detect my boot hard drive and dvd-rom drive that are on the same IDE ribbon, but it detects my Liteon 1633s and storage hard drive on ribbon 2, and gives me the :

NTLDR Not Detected, Press Any Key to Restart error.

Like I said, I have tried a few fixes like copying the NTLDR file from my WinXp disc into the WINDOWS Directory, and it did that. Tried copying the NTDETECT file over and it wouldn't go. Said invalid target.

Another strange thing is that if I run the XP bootdisc like I am going to reformat, it shows the information as if the OS is on my 250gb storage drive. The amount of occupied space shows like it should but still looks wrong.

The drive letters are showing as reversed. Main HD went from c to d from this.

And even my dvd-rom acts like it isn't even plugged in at all.

What can I do?

I tried deleting the partition on my main OS drive and reformatting, but after it rebooted after the reformat it just went to a black screen after running through the bios check. And it still doesn't detect those drives on the primary IDE.

Please help, I really don't want to have to get new equipment, but will as last resort.

What is showing as your 'C' drive? Is it your other hard drive?
It sounds like, for some reason it is trying to boot off of your storage drive. Did you ever have your OS on that storage drive? If so, the MBR is probably still present on the drive.

You could try using running your Windows disk, select recovery console, and type in "fixboot" (disconnect your storage drive first) and see if that helps.
If not, try disconnecting everything from your IDE except for your main drive and your CDROM, then installing the OS. If that works, then disconnect your CDROM.
Then hook up each of the other drives one at a time and let Windows detect and assign the drive letters (rebooting between each install).
If, when you reconnect your storage drive, you get the NTLDR error again, you may have to completely wipe and format the storage drive to get rid of the MBR (which may be causing the problem).

I just went through all that when I installed a new 160gb hard drive. Except mine would only boot with the old drive hooked up. Hope this helps you out, I know how frustrating it is.
 
Yes the "C" drive is showing as being the storage drive which has no Windows files on it at all.

I figured that I was going to have to try the whole one drive at a time method and see what happens, but boy time has sure been about as rare as a winning lottery ticket the last 3 or 4 days.

I'm going to give that a try and see what results I come up with and will post my findings hopefully with success.

Check to see if you have a floppy in the disk drive. Sounds elementary, but it will give you that prompt also. :)
 
if worst comes to worst.. can he just do a rescue install.. where all it does is reinstall all the critical files like NTLDR??

If thats the case then try clearing the bios.
Untill the bios can see the drives there is no way it can load an OS from them.

Well, I already had tried that and it said it worked but it didn't do anything.


And on the floppy idea, I've checked each drive to see if I had left something in and all were empty. So that wasn't it.


The bios reset was probably going to be my next bet. I'm up at the hospital with my stepson for the last couple of days so I haven't had a chance to get to it, but am running all kinds of thoughts through my head while I sit here with my laptop.

Laptop has been a lifesaver this week :D

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I'll let you all know what I end up doing after all is well. I'll get a chance tomorrow night to get to it.
 
Well here goes.


Here was the initial setup:

80gb master with a Liteon DvdRom as slave on primary IDE
250gb master with Liteon DVD +/- R as slave on secondary IDE


I had tried to flash the firmware for the Liteon DVD-R drive.

Now I removed all the drives except for the 80gb. Booted up, had an error but the Bios recognized it. That's good.

So I tried adding the Dvd rom drive back as secondary, booted up, neither are recognized.

Removed the dvdrom drive.

Added the DVD-R drive as secondary, booted had an error so I rebooted and reformatted and reinstalled Windows with no problem.

Left those 2 drives together and added the 250 back as master on the secondary IDE and got an error saying it couldn't find the boot disc.

Long story short here:

80gb is master with the 250gb as a slave on primary IDE and the DVD+/-R is currently master on secondary IDE till I get the 250gb cleared off and reformatted.

DVD-Rom is completely burned out. No power, nothing.

Sad thing is that I didn't even want to do any firmware flashing to that drive, but whatever file I had and lost due to the reformat, tore it up.

I wish I could remember where I got that firmware from so I could tell you all to stay the hell away from that site. (It was listed on the first page of a google search for Liteon 1633s firmware)

Gonna have to replace the dvdrom drive it appears. $40 is better than it could have been.
 
I got the same error on my wifes computer when her hard drive failed. All of a sudden I was getting that error during post, and it wouldn't read the HD as a master. It had read it previously, but we had some sort of power surge which killed the drive. Swapped in a new drive, and all is well.
 
It can be hit or miss with hacked firmware, and that's the chance you take. I flashed my NEC 2500A to 8x4x with DL support. But I was shitting bricks while the firmware was updating, even though it would only be $70 to replace it.
