soryr i dont have the exact specs , but ill assume its a p3 500 or less. 128mb ram or less and 20 gig drive . its a compaq... and win98 not sure which version.

so this girls computer , gets the NTLDR missing , press ctr alt del to restart ..

now i already went through the basic problems with this... disk in drive blah blah ....so finally i booted with the ntldr and ntdetect.com files , and i can get to the win98 options , but nothin works it just restarts , so i tried to boot with the disk , and it tells me the bootsec.dos is screwed , so im wonderin before i make another trip to the house

A. would i be able to get to a prompt with a dos boot disk ?
B. wood a win98 boot disk work ? im thinking no , but havent tried it.
C. worse case , would i be able to copy the files from the drive to another , then format it?, im assuming the drive is just so fragmented thats why it wont boot .

thanx in advance guys.

Win98 and an NTLDR message? something is screwy here.

I would suggest you search Microsoft Technet knowledgebase for a solution.

Yeah.. NTLDR (NT loader) is for Win NT (e.g. WIn NT 4.0 Win 2000, Win XP).. not Win98.. that just sounds weird as hell... i think that girl probably tried installing XP.. and the install only got tothe point were it copies the boot sector files and crap to the system, but the rest of 98 is still there... someting like that.. i dont know too much about software.. but uummm yeah.. sounds like bad news.. you might have to just have to do a fresh install..

DOS prompt? Sure. Just make sure you're set to boot to floppy before IDE-0 in BIOS

Dunno, but it couldn't hurt to try it. Probably would not though

This is what I would do. Just slave it in another system, back up the stuff she wants to keep, and then format it. It sounds like someone screwed up an upgrade or something like that, as was said above. You could also try to copy the NTLDR (etc.) files from a 2k/XP machine onto the HD (did this with a 2k machine that munched its NTLDR file once) and see if it will boot, but i would bet on not.

See above
