NTFS Dynamic Drive over USB

I have a SATA hard-drive formatted in NTFS that was converted to a dynamic drive. I am using a Vantec hard-drive dock to attempt to retrieve some data from it but am unable to do so. I have it plugged in with the USB cable. I have tried a different hard-drive (NTFS basic) that I can read just fine so the dock works. I have tried with both a friend's XP Pro machine and Vista Premium. The drive spins up, it seems to "mount" in both OSes (i.e. the USB storage device icon pops-up in the tray) but I cannot access it in windows explorer.

Something tells me that dynamic drives can't be read over USB and that if I plugged the drive using a SATA port it would work. Is that a correct assumption? Could the drive be accessed via eSATA if my inference is correct?
