Ok, it's not my boot drive, so I'm not terribly screwed. I would like to grab some data off of it though, but I'm not exactly sure what's wrong with the drive.

It shows up in explorer, but trying to access it gives me a message saying that it's not formatted. I'm a complete newbie at data recovery so I have no idea where to start. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

if you know it has data on it, but its still showing up as not formatted.. i'm not all that sure what software you can use.. i believe some recovery software will setup a "virtual file system" so it can get the data back... i couldnt steer you towards some software myself... i've never really had a problem.. i'll leave the posting of many links to all types of recovery software to ice czar:p

if there is an easy fix to this, please share, i have the exact same problem with one of my backup drives that has quite a bit of data on it, like 20 of 27 gigs filled with stuff....

Get Data Back

this company makes some good software for getting NFTS data back.. i own it actually... but have never had to use it. i've just feared loosing some of my dada currently on single drives so i bought it. i believe u can dl it and try it out.. u shouldnt have to make a winpe disk like the website mentions, because your computer works, it should be easy to get your files back. good luck-the_nerd

ps.. i forgot i had it when i posted above.. i just happend to look through all my recovery apps to see if i had anything like u were looking for:)

Yeah, Nerd is right, GDB has saved my ass a few times. Go get it and see what it does for you. It takes awhile, but scan the whole drive... see what happens.

i tried GDB but as of yet i havent been able to successfully make it work....anyone have any info on exactly how to make it work?

if i get the chance i'll try it out on an old 2.5gb hd i have around here somewhere.. in the meantime hopefully Bulldog311 can help u out or some other user-the_nerd

Well, GDB did manage to save some of my porn, but not any of my important files.:(

I think it may be a physical problem with my disk though, b/c I reformatted and now it's only showing 120GB instead of 250GB.

At any rate, thanks for your help guys.

SomeFknGuy, what exactly are you having trouble with?

GDB would scan the drive, show that it was finding files etc...when it finished it tried to show the files but just showed a blank screen....however i did reboot the computer shortly after that and it fixed the allocation table automatically...
