Well, having had this 9500 Pro since they first came out, it has finally come time to get a new card.

I'm looking for opinions on where you guys think my money should be spent.
I've heard good things about the 6600GT, would this be a viable option for upgrading?

the x800xl, 6800gt and the 6800nu...in that order

I'd rather not spend more than $200-$250, hence the 6600GT.
The video card is really the bottleneck in my system (3.0CGHz P4, XMS3200 RAM) so I assume this is the best card in that price range?

The 6600 GT should be fine for your needs in the $200 -$250 price range you mentioned. If you do a little looking, you can find a 6800nu for right around $250.

The x800XL is currently only a pcie format, and I surmise from your limited specifications that your motherboard possesses an AGP interface. If I am incorrect, than the x800xl ($299.99 msrp) may be worth the $50 increase for a significant boost in capabilities.

Regardless of you card decision, insure that your PS is sufficient as the 6600GT and above draw more power than the 9500 did.

Good luck.

If price is a problem, you can pick up a used 9800pro for a good price ($170 or under).

Do you think a 420Watt Allied power that came with my Chieftec case be enough to power the 6600GT if I put it on a seperate power lead?

I got a brand spankin new 6800nu evga off of ebay for 219..itll be here monday. If i were you thats where Id look. Its the first time ive ever considered ebay but now im starting to like it because its rediculous to spend 300 bucks on a card when you can get the same thing on ebay for way cheaper

6600GT barely outperforms a 9800Pro so its gonna leave you wishing you'd made a stronger upgrade. Get a x800xl or a 6800gt. You'll be much better off trust me.

I love it when people make no consideration to a budget.
I don't have $500 to just throw around for computer upgrades. I think I'm gonna order the BFG 6800GT OC, looks to be a great card.

No fucking shit, but I stated I wanted to spend $250 max.

Read.

Post.

I know the 6800 can be had for $270ish, but would the 6600GT OC perform better than the standard 6800?

6600GT OC might keep up with a stock 6800 at lower resolutions when not using AA/AF.

Right now, the 6600GT (for AGP) can't be touched at your price-point.

A 6800 would be a better card, but a 6800GT would be a better card than that, but everyone should really drop $1000 for a pair of SLIed 6800 Ultras, right?

6600GT is a great card for the price. Go ahead and get one. It'll be a nice step up from the 9500pro.

It should be fine for the 6600GT or the 6800 (plain; no GT or Ultra), although it is not the most reliable brand. Get your card of choice and just watch for any signs of instability after the install that would indicate PS is not delivering the goods.

Oh, and do not forget to clean out your ATI drivers using Driver Cleaner 3 prior to installing the nVidia drivers.

Good Luck.
