Alrighty,

My E6400/DS3 setup should be here later today. I was wondering what drivers, bios, and Dual core fixes I might be more advised to have. I play games like BF2, Oblivion, COD2, Company of Heroes, etc.if that makes any difference.

My current setup will remain the same below, with the intel parts replacing AMD, so let me know what you think.

I currently get the best results from the Forceware 84.56 video drivers. Are there updated chipset drivers for the DS3 (P version) or should I use the one packaged with the motherboard. Any drivers I should avoid?

Before I even start to install windows XP, are there any things I should shoot for in the bios, anything I should disable, enable.to avoid complications?

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can give!

I have the DS3 and e6300. I didn't apply any dual core fixes at all. I just loaded windows and loaded the drivers off the cd (i'm not using the onboard sound). I don't play games, so I don't know what you will need for that. This was the easiest build I've ever done. I set it up to 400 x 7 and it has been prime/memtest stable ever since. Easiest overclock I've ever done to be honest with you, also the easiest build I've ever had.

I think Gigabyte's site has some drivers that are newer than the ones on the CD. I have heard not to load the driver off of windows update...from what I've heard it caused problems with some peoples machines.

I am using the most recent bios (F6) and have no problems with it. Just make sure to post back here and let us know how things are going for you.

Congrats on your purchase, but the only advice I can give you is some grammatical advice.

You give or take adivce like you give or take complements.
Advise is an action, like you advise a king or queen to not start a war.

I guess I do have some helpful advice.
Never settle for the drivers that come on the disk. If you can, don't even install those. Get
the newest stuff on the Internet.

Yep update the bios to F6 (can be done after windows install).

Disable anything in the bios your not going to use (onboard audio for example), but you probably already know that.

Don't use built in raid if you have an ide optical drive at all. And 2nd the not using drivers from windowsupdate.

There are some updated drivers for the board on gigabyte's website, and I've had no issues with them at all.

Otherwise I too play several games. I have the latest nvidia drivers and everything works wonderfully. I'm not O/C'd at all either.

Update to F6 BIOS

Install:
Windows (hopefully SP2 disc)
Chipset drivers
Network, graphics, etc.. drivers
Windows Updates

& you should be all good.

Manually select each drive in the BIOS and change it from Auto to None, if you're not using it.... it will shave a little time off the boot up.

Oh my gosh, I feel pretty stupid after that. I didn't even realize it this morning, and I was in a haze of fatigue last night. I guess 5.5 years of college hasn't helped!

Thank you for the advice, guys. I will definitely keep what you said in mind. As for Bios Flashing, I am going to hold off for a while, if possible, because I've had far too many corrupted bios problems in the past.

Alright, messed with some things and now its at 2.991.6ghz and I'm testing it with 2 instances of Orthos SP2004. Idle temps are ~33-34C and load is still going up, but after 4 minutes hasn't broken 48*C yet.

Just so you know, if you are using orthos you dont have to run two instances of it. Orthos stresses both cores.

Figured that out just a minute ago. Thanks though. Its failed at 3.2 at stock timings so I am trying it with 2.1v mem and 5-5-5-15

PS: I don't think my CPU temps are right. My case is 81*F but my CPU is maxing at 48C

sounds right, by Speedfan, Easytune measurements.
Now if you load CoreTemp, it will probably tell you 10-15C higher, but thats still safe. CoreTemp you can go higher b/c its measuring temps inside each core. So it will read higher than you're used to seeing.

Thanks, I am extremely happy with it.

Superpi in 18seconds
3dmark 05 went from 9300 to 11,200
3dmark 06 went from 5051 to 6337.

I have to give Intel credit. This is the single best upgrade I've ever done for a computer. Even better than my upgrade from an All in Wonder 7200 to the FX5600 256mb
