I just found out that AIDA32, a freeware ap that was the tool for system information is back, (the developer went to Lavalys and it was discontinued) but they have now released a freeware version very similar called EVEREST Home Edition so download that and we will get the exact make model and version

cause the quickest way to kill a mobo is to flash the wrong BIOS ;)

OK either open the case get a flashlight and see which revision number is on the mobo
or
burn this to a CD http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ (instructions partway down on how to burn an ISO) and run AIDA16 from the floopy (need to change the boot order in the BIOS to CDROM)

i had sometihng like this happen to me. i had two 80gig drives in raid 0 and every so often the system would lock up. when i restarted, it would get the the screen where it detects hd's on the raid controller, and it wouldnt find the secondary, so i had every other 64k of about 100 gigs of stuff... GREAT!, but like you said, after a time of the computer being powered off, it would detect the secondary drive again, and i would go on my merry way until it happened a few days later, eventually it wouldnt detect anymore and i had to rma that drive. i have since remade the raid setup and have not had any further problems, so i would say that you hd is screwed up. check with the manufacturer if you are still under warranty. my drive was an ibm with 3 year warranty, and they didnt ask for ANY form of proof of purchase. i just got an ram number, shipped it there and they returned a newer model to me a few weeks later. worth checking out at least
 
OK we are in business :D

1st download DrDOS then click the exe it will ask for a floppy disk, insert a new one (if possible otherwise a freshly reformatted one w\ full format)
DrDOS is specifically built for BIOS Flashing and lacks any memory managers like himem
leave the floppy in the drive

2nd Download NF7/NF7-S V2 BIOS24 (Directdownload) to a folder on your desktop or elsewhere

we will not be using Abit Flashmenu for this considering the issues your having
so this is the old fashioned way which has far fewer things to go wrong
you can use flashmenu to update your BIOS when your not having issues at the next BIOS update release ;)

Access the folder you downloaded to
(typically you have an option to open the folder from the download window)
click the nf7d23.exe
it will popup a command prompt box (breifly) and extract the following files
ABITFAE.BAT
AWDFLASH.EXE
NF7D 23.BIN
NF7D 23.TXT
RUNME.BAT
copy those to the floppy disk drive (the TXT file is optional, dont copy the original download nf7d23.exe)

restart the computer with the floppy still in the drive and access the BIOS (typically the Delete key)
set the boot order to floppy disk drive first (if it isnt already) typically in the Advanced BIOS Featres submenu
and press F10 to save the change it will ask Y or N press Y

the computer will reboot to pure DOS mode and you will see an A:\> prompt
then you check files in the directory like
A:\>DIR
then again at the A:\ prompt type
A:\>runme
to start the RUNME.BAT (batch file) which will take care of the rest

now under no circumstances reboot the computer till its done,
and dont loose power either
it doesnt take long ;)


After BIOS is updated, pull off the power cord and then clear the CMOS data
via jumper before restarting system (youll need to check the manual for where the clear CMOS jumper is, typically its close to the battery)
Change the jumper position from default 1-2 to 2-3 for one minute to discharge the CMOS data, and then put it back to default 1-2. Switch on the power supply unit or pull in the power cord. Remove the floppy disk and Press the power-on button to boot up system. If it works, hit "Del" key to enter the BIOS setup page to do correct settings. (safe defaults in this case)

I have the same problem you have, though a few minutes before my computer locks up I hear the click of death and my hdd spins up :(

Oddly enough, if I tip my comp over to the left while I start it it detects the drives fine and windows starts great??? :confused:
 
Starpoe2 start at the beginning for a troubleshooting proceedure
offhand Id guess you need to reset your data and power cables
 
I'm getting extremely mad at these computers. With the two computers in the house that have Internet I've tried to put that stuff on the floppy. Both floppy drives have lights on the outside and they are both hooked into the mobo. Neither will recognize that there's even a floppy in the drive.

I guess I'm stuck with burning those files to a CD and taking it to a different computer to make the boot disk with. I'll do taht right now.
 
oh wow. I'm so frustrated. I finally made the boot disk. I put it in the broken computer, turn it on, and it acts like the A drive isnt even there. The floppy is set at first boot device, and the disk is in the drive. Power is going thru the drive, and the cable is connected to the drive and the motherboard. I dont know what to do anymore.
