Nova Launcher

that was my favorite. sometimes i do miss screwing around with my phone.

I'm a big Nova fan, but it's been pretty spotty for the last few years. Luckily, the Pixel Launcher has actually adopted a lot of the stuff I tweaked in Nova. Not everything, but probably 85%. That's been good enough for me. I messed around with a few alternatives and none of those seemed to be any better for my own use case.

The launcher scene has been fading away for a while, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

The simple reality is that Android's baseline features (whether from Google or your OEM of choice) are better at scratching the customization and functinoality itches that launchers like Nova filled. There are still reasons to consider them (Niagara Launcher if you like minimalism, for instance), but the days of immediately rushing to install a launcher seem to be over.

Look at it this way: when even iPhone users have a lot of say over how their lock and home screens appear, you know we're in a different era.

I still like the launcher for being able to hide apps from the full app drawer that I already have on my lockscreen or the ones I never use but can't install. I preferred Apex Launcher to Nova but they're gone too. rip

As of January 2026, the newly acquired Nova Launcher is continuing to offer a Prime Lifetime membership with a one-time purchase, rather than a subscription model.
Price and Key Details (as of Jan 20, 2026):
  • Price: The price has been set at $3.99 USD by the new owner, Instabridge.
  • Ad-Free Guarantee: Prime members will have their purchases honored, and Nova Prime will remain ad-free.
While the new owners will be introducing ads to the free version, they have affirmed that existing and new Prime purchases will be honored to keep the experience ad-free for paying users.

After having used Nova Launcher Prime for my past three phones and my present, I have never experienced any issues. With each new phone, I install it and resize a few grids here and there; export the settings to an online storage site, then forget about it. My previously acquired Prime Lifetime membership has been honored.

As for Android Authority expressing criticism that Nova Launcher Free is going to install ads? Turn off your ad blocker and head over to the Android Authority web site. You may be hard pressed to find ads as intrusive and large as what you will see starting on their home page.

I'm happy to hear that! I was searching for a new launcher.. I've had prime for years tho.

Don't knock the writers too much. They're probably just as opposed to excessive advertising as you are, but they're not the ones controlling the site revenue model.

Smart Launcher works a lot better for me than Nova does. Quite sad that the original creator decided to abandon it after the first acquisition.

Yikes. I guess I'm glad I pulled myself away from it a few years ago. I can't imagine another AI agent being something 99.99% Nova Launcher users want, so it's probably a massive pivot.
On the plus side, the Pixel Launcher is getting better with each release and with Android 17 you can even get rid of the entire "At a Glance" section if you want. It isn't quite what Nova was, but it's covering most of my bases. Now I just have to hope that Google doesn't screw up the hardware.

Thanks for the info; went in and set Nova Launcher to not auto-update.
