Notebook video cards?

I'm looking for a notebook to buy for school in September. Of course, I'd hate to have a computer that can't run most games. How well do notebook video cards (ie. mobility radeon 9200 or geforce 5200 or whatever) fare with games like HL2 or any game really? Also, what's a good laptop all around for gaming that isn't too expensive? Advice is greatly appreciated.
 
I don't have too much experience with notebook graphic chips, but a friend of mine has a mobility 9000 and he played all the way through hl2 on the thing, at like low-to-medium details.
 
I currently own a Inspiron 9300 from Dell with a Geforce 6800 Go, which is basically a 6800 Ultra with lower clock speeds. They overclock well and paired up with a P-M and a 17in display you are doing some serious gaming with decent battery life. As well as keeping the price well below the 2000 mark, which everyone thought was the neccessary breaking point for a gaming laptop.

As for video cards for nice gameplaying on a lappy

Moblity Radeon 9600/9700/9800, Geforce FX Go 5600s are decent, and of course the Geforce 6600/6800 Go series
 
I have and IBM T42 with a Radeon 9600

HL2 Runs on medium-ish gfx, no problem (1024)

However, CSS is a different beast, FPS is fine... but my HD is only 5400, so loading takes a long time, and since it uses the page file.. sometimes it just hangs for a second (in which i get shot)
 
Laptops can have real video cards too.

With ATI's x800 mobility and Nvidia's 6800 go Ultra video cards (and some slower but still capable versions of the same) out there, you can get a laptop with a real video card.

The current king for laptop video speed is the Nvidia 6800 go Ultra, it is actually as fast as the desktop Ultra, just lower power consumption. The x800 mobility is comparable to the x800xl desktop card.

Dell sells a good Centrino (Pentium M) laptop with the Nvidia card, and places like widowpc sell both.

How much are you looking to spend?

yeah, I want to keep it around 1500 canadian. I realise that doesn't give me many options.
