Hi all, I am pretty knowledgable when it comes to purchasing desktop compontents but i am in the market for a new notebook. The only problem is i dont know the best places to buy them. Here is what i am looking for:

1.6 - 2.0 Dual core (AMD or INTEL)
1G Ram
XP Home
Nice Graphices card ( Auto cad and other Strenuous programs)
100GB hard drive (Could deal with a 60)
17'' Screen (Need this)
Around $1500

Would prefer Sata and DDR2 but i know amd does not include that yet.
I have been looking at Dell and HP but I really have not been able to hit my price range

Thank you for any input.

To be honest, I think you're going to be hard pressed to find something like that alot less then $1500.

I think you're really looking between $1500-$2000 for everything you're going to want.

What's driving up the price is the screen really. I can find LOTS of nice machines for you that are under $1500 but they all come with 15.4 screens.

e1705 would be your best bet, it has a 17" screen and i think it comes standard with the 7900gs, if not, you can get it...

you might also be able to build your own from scratch, www.rjtech.com sells barebones, but i'm not sure what kind of gfx cards they come with.

I just configured the e1705 and this is what I came up with...

1.6 - 2.0 Dual core (AMD or INTEL)
Intel® Core™ Duo Processor T2300E (1.66GHz/667MHz FSB)
1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz
Genuine Windows® XP Home Edition (Along with Re-Installation CD)
Nice Graphices card ( Auto cad and other Strenuous programs)
256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7900 GS
100GB hard drive (Could deal with a 60)
100GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
17'' Screen (Need this)
17 inch Wide Screen XGA+ Display
Around $1500
$1,626

So...

e1705 would be your best bet

Yeah. In my findings i did find that the 1705 was the best bet thus far but my knowledge is pretty limited to hp and dell. The 17'' screen, though more expensive is actually a necessity. I guess when it comes down to it, are those really my best option. Are there any other Sites that are good for purchesing other laptopes such as ACER and some other "off" brands. My personal experiece has been good with Dell but i was just curious if there were any "Deal" sites, or brands that i might not have known about.

IMO if you can swing it I might go with the Toshiba Satillite P105-S921. You get a nice Toshiba grade 17 inch LCD, 7900GS video so you'll have plenty of graphics power, Toshiba build quality (and NOT dell build quality - now I've read all of the "dell is better now" stuff but let's be serious here, no joking around - the toshiba is better built). It also comes with a built in pc-card sized remote control for multimedia and a fingerprint scanner. The only con is the screen resolution...I think it is 1440x900

IMO there is no comparison unless you need a higher resolution (which I personally probably would)

it's up there now but with all the new stuff prices may fall by purchase time...there is also the HP nx9420 but that only has an ATi x1600 which is a tier down from the 7900 GS....with the HP you're really paying for the build quality since it is business oriented. Still you could snag one within your price range and it might do the job.

I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with you there. I don't think a Toshiba is a better built machine. Not by any means. I haven't owned one, no, but I use one at work, and they are don't feel as sturdy as or hold up to our abuse as well as my personal i9300 (which is an e1705 by any other name). Not a scientific finding, just an opinion contradictory to yours.
