Hi all,
My notebooks is about four years old, and has been on for a lot of that time. Just recently, while performing a .rar compression, my drive made a harsh clicking noise almost, as if the header got off track, and spun down. It quickly spun back up, but the system responded like crap for a few seconds. After trying to finish the compression, I had to restart my system because of Windows Updates. During the reboot, it would spin the hdd up, and then it would harshly stop and try to start up again. Sever times Windows came up with an error message a long the lines of unmountable boot device... I finally managed to get into Windows eventually, but now everytime that I try to boot it, windows takes close to ten minutes to boot in... My machine seems to be inept at dealing with large files of any kind, and I find that doing any kind of registry cleaning, adaware/spybot scans make the hdd do that horrible click and lose its speed for a split second.
My question is, is this a genuine hard drive problem? I don't think I should try reformatting because this notebook has been in the last couple months...
If this is a genuine problem, is there a drive you could recommend me? I think this one is a 40gb seagate 5400..
Thanks in advance...
