Notebook Graphics Cards

A lot of PC laptops say "integrated graphics card," I was wondering how good these graphics cards are?

Like, the ibm x40 I believe is integrated graphics?

Can they play 3d games like World of Warcraft or Wolfenstein Enemy Territory or Counterstrike?

Also how much memory do these graphics cards have?

I don't use integrated graphics on anything I have - but I do know that (usually) integrated solutions use system memory and you decide how much will be allocated in the bios.

Last question first: it depends on the integrated graphics. Intel Extreme Graphics 1/2/GMA900 all manage the amount of system memory automatically, up to 64MB (IEG1/2) or 128MB (GMA900). There are no settings to manually adjust the size. ATI IGP and SiS chipsets may allow manual size adjustment, but it's probably set to a fixed value on most laptops (usually 32MB or 64MB).

How good is it on the x40? Not very good. It uses the 855GME chipset (Intel Extreme Graphics 2) with single channel PC2700 memory. The CPU and video chip share 2.7GB/s of total memory bandwidth. Plus the IEG2 graphics only has a single dual texture pipeline @ 250MHz and no support for pixel or vertex shaders or hardware T&L.

Counterstrike should play OK, but IEG2 doesn't meet the minimum requirements for WoW (no hardware T&L). Enemy Territory will probably play in low resolution.

pxc said it pretty much right on. Mind you counter strike source will prob play like crap on most intergrated graphics if it plays at all. If you are talking about the orignal then yea it should run. Pretty much if you want to play some games go for one without intergrated graphics.

Sorry if this is just restating whats been said, but in other words the graphics on a Inspiron 700m would not be able to handle WoW?

What would be a solid mainstream mobile graphics card that could play games like WoW, Battlefield 2, or Counterstrike: source?

min card to handle those is a X600 or 9700 Radeon or equiv nvidia card, i have a 9700 in my laptop and it still sucks playing CS:S its decent but not for gaming online with like 30 other people, single player is *ok* the extreme graphics card i would say the best game it can play is maybe UT 1 but anything past that is asking for trouble

I have a Compaq v2135US and I use it to dual log another friend in to help lvl some of my newer chars all the time and I have no problem getting things done. The only place that it sux is when you enter orgrimmar cause of all the people that need to be loaded or some big pvp fights that used to happen at Tarren Mill/ South Shore.

Laptop specs:
PM 1.5ghz 2mb cache
Intel Extreme Graphics 2 integrated with 64 meg shared memory
14" wxga screen for 1280x800 gaming
512meg pc2100 ddr memory
60gig hd

This laptop is faster than my old desktop which is an Athlon 1ghz@1.2ghz 512pc133 gf4 ti4200

Obviously any dedicated gaphics will be better. also WoW seems to like faster cpu's also

My 600m has a radeon 9000 64 meg card in it. CSS runs pretty good at 800x600 as does gta:sa. I just had to tweak it some. As far as with integrated I would say you are not going to have a good gaming experience.

on the system requirements for WoW, it says GeForce 2 or better, so would my 64 MB GeForce 2 MX 400 work? (not that I would use it, but I'm talking MINIMUM requirements), this is for a desktop btw. (btw, where does it say on the graphics card, support for T&L, this is the first time i've heard of T&L)

how good would WoW run on a ATI Stealth S80, Radeon 9200, 128 MB?

oh and integrated graphics would be compared to which video card in terms of performance? geforce 2 maybe?

I have an ABS mayhem g2, which has a 128 mobile 9700. I play CS:S on it in my buddies dorm when we do clan matches (I prefer to verbally talk to and play with clanmates instead of typing or using a mic, which i don't have on my pc *** I DON'T "GHOST" *** if you must ask LOL!!! I run it at 1280:800 at medium settings and I have to qualms. Like it was said earlier, when there are like 30+ peeps going at it and the latency starts to rise, it can get a little chunky, but not too bad, the baby does a decent job.

WoW looks and plays marvelous. If you can get a widescreen, get it by all means for WoW (Widescreen = more interface breathing room = more play screen ^_^) Ironforge can get a little choppy when entering from a gryphon or hearthing, but it plays just great to me, mostly high settings at 1280x800.

Hell, even battlefield 2 plays fine, though I had to figit around to get widescreen working.

I say 9700 or nvidia equivalent at the minimum is a must to get decent performance. I haven't tried doom3 "yet" but nevertheless these games need a good card; integrated will just not do for those gaming engines. If your lucky you can get playable performance from lesser cards, but you have to be a good tweaker for that miracle.
