Notebook CPU running at half speed :(

I was recently given a pretty nice notebook by a good friend of mine. He got a new one because he felt this one was rather sluggish, dispite the fact that it's fairly brand new. It is a HP Pavillion ze4115 with an AMD Athlon XP 1500+ (which is supposed to run at 1333Mhz). Well, I re-installed a fresh copy of XP Pro on it, and began playing with it a little bit. I also noticed a bit of sluggish-ness from it, for example my computer taking 15-20 seconds to open on the screen, and things just kind of hanging. Well, I downloaded the utility "wcpuid" which allows you to check the cpu speed in real time, and to my surprise when I ran it, it said I was only at 662Mhz. This would explain the notebook being sluggish. I went into the BIOS to check for any settings I might change to correct this, and I found nothing of the sort. Can anybody help me fix this problem and get this thing running at full speed again?

do you know of a way to reset the laptop BIOS? if not, check HP's website / call their tech support (tech support is probably the best way to go.)
 
my laptop runs at half speed unless its plugged in, as a way of power conservance. try plugging yours in and see if theres any difference
 
It's not your processor slowing you down... For that laptop the speed automatically goes up when you need it (it reaches 100% of that capacity.
 
It's probably Cool and Quiet or Power Now at work. AMD's throttle down to save battery. Tons of info available Here. Search for Power Now, you'll probably find an answer.
 
I wonder if our P4 Desktop (478 PGA) CPU turned Notebook could also do that? Anyone ever try to down clock, and do it while operating?
 
i m guessing your processors been downclocked

try to get into the BIOS
 
That might be difficult and it's a compaq thing we are talkingabout. If it's powernow then it's not hampering your system in the least bit. Get a program like prime95, leave it on for a bit until you see it using 100% of your cpu. Then check your speed again. It should go all the way up.

He doesn' need to go to the bios at all and i doubt a compaq would give him any usefull options.
