I've recently acquired a new laptop computer equipped with Windows XP Pro and an ATI Mobility M10 (I believe this is an ATI 9600?).

I have tried putting a few games on here, but for some reason games won't even play or simply play terribly when they shouldn't.

Games I've tried: Doom and Doom II (both have about 1 fps) and Serious Sam (errors out).

Anyone know if there is something I should do, a particular driver I should look for? I've been able to play games like Doom on older laptops with far inferior specs with far better results (although sometimes sound support isn't available). This is why I think this might be a graphics issue.
 
Are you sure its a Mobility M10? I think the Radeon 9600 mobility will show up as a "Radeon 9600 mobility" in WinXP.

If its a used laptop, more than likely its a Radeon mobility M1, which has 8MB of memory (thats the easiest way to tell, if it has 8MB its the M1 if it has 32, 64 or 128MB its the 9600)
 
Gateway lists it as follows (new laptop):
Graphics controller ATI® Mobility™ Radeon™ 9600 high-performance graphics chipset
Video memory 64 MB frame buffer

Further hw audit tools confirm that.
 
Try installing the latest Catalyst "PATJE" mobility modder install program:

This should let you install any of the newer ati.com Catalyst driver set for your Mobility Radeon.

Otherwise, you can also try the latest Omegas from www.omegadrivers.net, but try the Patje first.

Its unfortunate, but many of the larger laptop makers do not keep their drivers up to date with ATi (all it needs is a digital signature, and ACPI compliance with any special software that may be default for that laptop)
 
I swear I installed drivers when I reformatted and reinstalled SUSE and XP when I got this laptop, but I took a try at installing the drivers listed on Gateway's site, rebooted, and things look sweet now. Serious Sam runs as fast as I've ever had it on my desktops, etc.
