I'm trying to fix my friends Gateway 450sx4 laptop. The problem is every time I try to power it up the LED's flash on real fast then back off 1 sec after. It will not turn on any further than that. I tried moving the power cord around to see if it was making good contact and it is.

Did you try removing the battery before powering with AC? Try removing the battery and if you get the same result, you probably need a new system board (or if you're lucky, and charging system daughtercard). If you remove the battery and then get no LED activity, then most likely you have a break in the wires feeding the AC adapter port.
